Live 15 First Impressions

Just got the PS4 version today, have only played the opening game, tutorial, and one game of LUT. So far I am liking this a lot. Not extremely deep (that will come down the road a few years) but overall I'm very happy so far.

+The new animations are well done.
+CPU is ultra-aggressive
+Star Players feel like stars.

-Still running into the "hold the ball in the post and get 3 sec call by the CPU bug"

The game still isn't ready to compete with 2K yet, maybe a few years down the road. The gameplay still feels a bit awkward, it doesn't really flow well.

I did like Live last year, but the delay was a cause for concern, as I thought they should have had the game ready when 2K released, or even before.

At this point, I think most of us want to root for Live because it's the only sports game with competition. I'd love to see EA get viable results out of Live, and maybe that spurs them to re-make MVP Baseball, or maybe 2K comes out with another NHL game. I know we'd all like to see NFL2k, but the other sports games are more realistic chances at this point.

After playing 2K15 on PC, Live is just awkward and clunky. Some of it is decent, don't get me wrong but it needs to be polished. The players look good in the cutscenes but some of the animations during gameplay are just weird.

No sliders also hurts this, along with the lack of a game speed slider.

I'm a big fan of both games. Some of my biggest complaints were addressed with Live 14 tho while virtually none of my complaints were addressed from 2K14.

I will still take responsiveness and "jerky" or "robotic" animations over drawn out unrealistic (IMO) animations and predetermined outcomes.

I don't really see it as a competition. Both games do some things well and fail (sometimes miserably) at others. In my opinion the leap Live15 made is almost astonishing. While it certainly can't be considered a "9.0" game, a 7.5-8.0 isn't out of the question at all.

Right now, if the game modes had more depth and maybe an online league... We would have a hell of a battle on our hands (in my opinion). I personally give Live the edge in graphics, online and presentation... Gameplay is about equal. 2K has deeper modes at this point for sure.

My EA Access subscription expired in Sept but I was still somehow able to download the full game with a 6 hour trial. Is that how their demos work now, or did I luck out?

Anyway I think the game is surprisingly good. Played one game online so far, ironically on my first try it failed to load into the game, second try it definitely wasn't silky smooth and lagged occasionally, but it was still playable. Starting to think that this is mainly a console/hardware issue. Aside from that the game was great, there are definitely certain things 2k does better, but I think Live does certain things better as well, Live specifically tops them on the two core issues that ruins 2k for me.

1. No bs 3's. 3 point shooting in 2k is too easy and definitely feels more realistic on Live.

2. Mid-range game is far more realistic as well. 2k favors an outside or inside game as they've nerfed spot-up mid-range shooting into the ground. To the point where the game just feels like it favors flash over substance. On Live I don't have to perform a bunch of stick moves to increase my chances of scoring, I can simply create open shots through good ball movement, spot-up, time the release and nail the jumper. Makes the game more authentic and less cheesy.

Movement feels pretty precise as well while still being weighted. On the downside, the post game definitely isn't as physical as it is in 2k, alley oops are too easy, and offensive rebounding might be too frequent as well.

If they patch offensive rebounding and alley oops, tone both down, I definitely think Live gameplay is extremely comparable to 2k if we look at it from a sim perspective.

The layups and troublesome post-game are things I thought needed to be fixed, and I know that many in the community wanted those fixed as well. Sometimes, even a dunker like Lebron would go for a lay-up instead of a dun and it frustrated me. Also, I really liked the three-point game, and unless you have a highly-ranked shooter, it was difficult to make the shot.

Also, having sliders could help with many of those things, but I also understand they were working from the ground-up these past two years. A third installment should have sliders in my mind.

I'll be picking up the new game tomorrow.

Espn presentation and graphics upgrade were the biggest things I noticed. I haven't played 2K yet but the fact that the online modes are pretty much unplayable steers me toward Live. I don't understand how EA could have improved their game so much and 2K couldn't. I would think server issues would be an easy thing to fix from one year to the next but they didn't address it.
