Hey guys, I know I am new around here, but I also have been doing mock drafts over the past few years. I was a contributor to Doghouse football before they were bought out, and I also help with newnfldraft.com
So I wanted to get some feedback on a mock that I will be updating on a pretty consistent basis. Here is my pre-Senior Bowl. I will then have one in between the Senior Bowl and Combine. Give me some feedback and let me know what you think. I see the one on the main page is pretty good, but mine is a little different. This is not meant to compete, I'm mainly looking for feedback:
1. St. Louis Rams - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame - How is Glen Dorsey doing in Atlanta? What about Aaron Curry in Detroit? Or what about the Chargers liking the "defensive talent" in the '04 draft? End of the day, when a team needs a franchise Quarterback, they don't pass up the opportunity. The Rams may make a move toward a free agent Quarterback (or trade for one), but until this happens, Clausen is the pick. He is widely considered the top QB and has impressed in three seasons in a pro-style offense. He might not be the "best player on the board," but is still a top five prospect.
2. Detroit Lions - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - The best player in this year's draft, should fall no farther than this position. If the Rams do take Clausen, Suh is the pick here. The question is, do the Lions shop the pick or take King Kong? Their defensive woes continue and while an offensive lineman may be a bigger need; the coaching staff seems sold and paying more attention to the league's worst defense.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma - The Bucs found a way to squander the first pick, and lost out on their chance at Suh. While Suh would be a great fit in the Tampa 2 defense, McCoy is an upgrade over what the team has now. Many consider Berry the pick here, but if McCoy is on the board, Tampa takes the Sooner.
4. Washington Reskins - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma - Two Sooners in a row, as Bradford goes off the board. A new coach in Washington signals change, which usually starts with the Quarterback position. Bradford is the type of player that will impress in interviews and workouts. The Redskins haven't been sold on Campbell in years, and he now looks like he is on his way out.
5. Kansas City Chiefs - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State - The Chiefs need to protect their young investment (Cassell). Not giving him time to throw won't help him progress, and allowing 42 sacks simply does not give the Quarterback a great chance to succeed. Okung is an athletic, durable blocker that is a strong pass blocker. He also has the speed and footwork to block in space. He would start immediately for the Chiefs.
6. Seattle Seahawks - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee - The Hawks and Carroll land the next Ed Reed. Berry is the type of playmaker Seattle could use in the secondary. The unit last season was atrocious and will be key position of interest to Carroll. Also, the future of Matt Hasselbeck and Walter Jones will be key, as to what Seattle will do with this pick. With no real value for a QB here, the pick should be the best player available.
7. Cleveland Browns - Joe Haden, CB, Florida - A late surge by the Browns squandered their top five pick and chance at drafting a Quarterback. Much like the Bucs, they now have to settle, after winning late in the season. The nice thing about settling this high in the draft, you usually have some positions of need. Haden could be a great corner at the next level, and with the success of Darrelle Revis, Haden will be a sexy pick - especially for the Mangenius (Both are 5'11" 190 lbs. with similar skill set).
8. Oakland Raiders - Jason Pierre-Paul, OLB, South Florida - No one will know this pick until it is announced. That is the fun of Al Davis, and something tells me, he won't disappoint. He loves the Combine and those "workout warriors." This pick could be one of many players, but an offensive lineman or defensive player seem the best fit. Pierre-Paul is a hybrid end/linebacker that will ply outside linebacker at the next level. He should impress with his physical ability, blazing 40 and high ceiling.
9. Buffalo Bills - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers - All signs point to the Offensive Line being priority #1 for the Bills in the draft. While new Head Coach Chan Gailey will get a chance to assess the Quarterback situation, they are in the position to look at later rounds for the answer. Protecting said Quarterback, especially his blindside, is crucial. Davis brings a big frame and would be a good fit. While his stock might be hurt by issues of conditioning and stamina, he physical ability might outweigh any issues.
10. Jacksonville Jaguars - Tim Tebow, QB, Florida - The Jaguars might have other glaring needs, but there is one that trumps all of them: ticket sales. Selling out home games has been a problem of late, and Tebow would be a draw. Tebow is a strange prospect, and many don't view him as a First Round pick. Yet his attitude and marketing appeal are factors that can make up for readiness to play in a prototypical NFL offense.
11. Denver Broncos - Rolando McClain, OLB, Alabama - McClain seems to be the perfect fit at inside linebacker. The future of Brandon Marshall is the future of this pick. For now, focusing on the defense and securing McClain is a smart pick.
12. Miami Dolphins - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - Bryant may not be available at #12, and his stock will certainly rise the closer we get to April. The Dolphins and Broncos pick could easily be flipped, and I'm sure Parcells is watching the Brandon Marshall situation closely.
13. San Francisco 49ers - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa - Bulaga is an intriguing prospect, who was slowed by injuries, but still excited teams. His mauling, aggressive style could help Gore and the run game. He just seems like a Singletary-esche player.
14. Seattle Seahawks - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - Williams ability to play both tackle positions is intriguing, especially for a team in Seattle's position. With Walter Jones nearing the end of his career, Williams is the type of player who could start his career at right, then take over at left.
15. New York Giants - Taylor Mays, S, USC - Kenny Phillips has done little to impress, and the Giants will definitely be looking to bolster the defense. While they could look in the trenches, the value isn't on the board. Mays is an incredible athlete and could fit the Giants well as a tackle-first, cover-second safety.
16. Tennessee Titans - Everson Griffin, DE, USC - This pick seems to be an end in every mock I have seen. This is no different, as the Titans will look to replace Vanden Bosch and find a true pass rusher. Griffin seems to fit the bill.
