In Tuesday's Boston Herald, Ian Rapoport quotes friends of holdout Patriots guard Logan Mankins as saying the Pro Bowl offensive guard is financially secure and prepared to sit out the entire season.

Mankins turned down an offer from New England believed to be worth $45.5 million over seven years, and also refused to sign the $3.3 million restricted-free-agent tender offer made by the Pats after negotiations broke down. He and his representatives are looking for a deal similar to the seven-year, $56.7 million contract signed by New Orleans' Jahri Evans. Another offensive lineman, the Jets' Nick Mangold, is expected to sign a seven-year, $55 million contract on Tuesday.

Rapoport reports that Mankins' colleagues believe he will never play for the Patriots again and hopes to become an unrestricted free agent when a new collective-bargaining agreement is signed. The current CBA expires after this season.

I think his agent talked him into the corner here. He came out and said that the team didn't hold up their promise or treat him right all this mushy BS. When it comes down to it it's a business and the Patriots have never really payed their draft talent if they don't feel it's necessary.

Unfortunately, I do think it's necessary. Mankins is a high caliber guard and not having him will come back to bite us in the ass, especially if the Nick Kaczur injury is long term like they are hinting at. What do you guys think about this?
 
I always shake my head a bit when an interior lineman gets a 40+ million dollar contract. Guards are probably the most replaceable position outsides of special teams in football.
 
He indeed does deserve similar money to Evans and Mangold. The pats are cutting him 10 mil short and he's been a great lineman longer than what Evans has.

While I like Mankins, his agent and him are dicking him here. He was franchised tagged, and was going to get a 1 year salary in line with some of the top in the league. I don't care if he likes the Tag or not.. his union allowed it into the CBA. If he wants to sit out and rot all year... good for him. If theres one thing they should have known is that if you want to play hard ball the Pats will play it. Good luck to him wherever he ends up... it has done wonders for Astante and Branch.. lol
 
If he was franchise tagged then I definitely think he should've signed it. Btw, it didn't work out bad for Asante. He got a shit ton of money and the Eagles have made the playoffs more times in the past two seasons then the Pats have.

The offer the Patriots gave him is good enough. Not the Patriots fault the Saints skewed the market by overpaying for Evans. Which is understandable since guard are more important to the Saints offense.

Anyway, I would like to see Mankins back, but not for the money he is asking. If he wants to sit out this season and also risk missing next season because of the lockout that could happen, but I can't see another team giving big money to a guard that missed two years of football.

Talk to the Eagles about that. Without Herremans, our interior is crap. The other guard Stacy Andrews just takes up space. So the last 2 preseason games, I have seen MLBs and DTs just cruising up the middle into Kolb's face.

Jacob Bell played pretty well last year. Definitely up to his contract. He's earning about 20 mil less total over the contract than what Evans is earning.

You're WAY undervaluing guards. Mankins is a top 3 guard and no one off the street can sniff what he has done. Also my bet is there aren't a lot of 300 pound men that can run like he can and block for those screen passes the Patriots love to use so much.

With the way the line has played in the 2 preseason games I would say the Mankins has pretty much lost most of the leverage that he had.

Since he is an RFA all they had to do was offer him a tender, which they chose to offer the highest possible tender that pays 3.3 million and means if anyone else signed him they would owe the pats 1st and 3rd draft picks. That's a far cry from 11 mil for a franchised OL which he MIGHT have been if not for labor strife, and hell people bitch about being franchised all the time too. And it's also far from the 6.5 mil a year the patriots are lowballed him at for a new contract.

Frank Bauer? Wrong again.

Twelve days ago, the agent for Logan Mankins predicted the Patriots would keep escalating the standoff with the Pro Bowl guard by sending him a letter warning that he'd be put on the team's "roster-exempt" list.

Speaking to Albert Breer of The Boston Globe, Bauer said, "We haven't got it yet, but it'll come."

Bauer added, "[The Patriots] don't care . . . I would expect them to do everything nasty that they can."

The Patriots were eligible to put Mankins on the list after their second preseason game. If they had, Mankins would have to serve a three-game regular-season suspension when he returned. That was last Thursday.

But, as far as I can tell, the Patriots didn't send the letter. And they haven't placed Mankins on the roster-exempt list. Entreaties to several sources have been met with the same general reply: "Mankins is not under contract."

Neither are Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill of the Chargers, however. They are in identical situations to Mankins - restricted free agents refusing to sign their tenders - and San Diego opted to put them on the roster exempt list.

Putting Mankins on a roster-exempt list seemed pretty counterproductive to me in the first place. If the sides worked out an 11th-hour deal on the eve of the season, every bit of satisfaction both sides would have would be washed away by the fact Mankins has to sit out until October.

Bauer's been scattershotting his way through this mess. The same day he told Breer the Patriots were going to send Mankins the letter, he told Karen Guregian at The Boston Herald that the Patriots asked him on May 4 if Mankins would be amenable to a deal a little larger than the Saints Jahri Evans.

Since that day, Bauer said, the Patriots haven't gotten back to him.

The Evans deal was signed May 5. Ooop.

And why, pray tell, would the Patriots seek the okay to pay Mankins more than Evans, who just signed the richest deal for a guard in NFL history?

No wonder the whole negotiation seems a little screwed up, no?

Just another contrasting opinion from Tom E. Curran, who is usually spot on when it comes to the Patriots. I agree with Super Kevin, kind of. I'll use the Patriots as an example. Stephen Neal has been hurt, a lot. Stephen Neal is also valued as a good RG, but him not being in the line-up compared to say Nick Kaczur who would move inside or a back up filling in has never really screamed to me as a concern area. While not having Mankins pulling/out on the screens will hurt, I don't think it's as big of a concern as not having Revis or Jackson(duh).
