The Mariners, Nationals and Athletics have combined on a three-team trade that will send Michael Morse to the Mariners, John Jaso to the A's and right-hander A.J. Cole to the Nats, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports. The Nationals will also receive a player to be named later and a "good" prospect as part of the trade, reports Amanda Comak of the Washington Times. It was reported earlier this evening by Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link) that the M's were close to a deal that would bring Morse to Seattle.

Morse has been a strong trade commodity ever since the Nationals re-signed Adam LaRoche. At least five or six teams had shown interest in Morse, with the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox among those linked to the first baseman/outfielder.

Cole is on his way back to the Nationals organization after being dealt to the A's last winter as part of the trade package for Gio Gonzalez. Cole, 21, was drafted by the Nats in the fourth round of the 2010 draft and was rated as the 57th-best prospect in the game by Baseball America prior to the season. In 27 starts for two of Oakland's A-ball affiliates, Cole posted a 3.70 ERA, 133 strikeouts and 29 walks over 133 2/3 innings.

So I was wrong. Thought the Nats would flip Morse for a lefty. Through I guess that could end up being the PTBNL. Curious as to see what prospect the Nats will be getting. Mariners have a ton of pitching.

I thought Davey Johnson was fine with the righties they had, as they were pretty effective against left-handed hitting as well. In addition to the PTBNL, the Nationals also got pitcher Blake Treinen. I think they could have gotten more, but if that wasn't the case, there is no problem with having depth.

I too think they should have gotten more. I'm less than impressed with a guy going on 25 and coming out of Single A. Does depend on the PTBNL, but in all honesty, I think the trade is only okay.

I believe the plan is to use Stammen against lefties. Which, to me, is a mistake, as he was quite good against both sides of the plate.

Lulz, his .861 OPS disagrees. Oh, and not in the hitters' paradise of Milwaukee. But sure, keep thinking that Morse isn't that good. Sort of explains why you love Hart so much ...
Oh, and Cole was ranked 57 last year. So, at worst, he's a top 100 prospect.
Anyway, ignoring the Brewers fanboy, I'm warming up to Treinen. The California league is a hitters' league. He'll make a decent relief pitcher.

Sweet stat bro. Morse's career OPS is not .861, nor has it ever been .861 any single year of his career. Last year his OPS was .791. Morse is a one trick pony he hits for power. He can't run, he can't play the field, he can't take a walk. And he's old. He's played a full season once, in his entire career. Again, what exactly makes him valuable?

In 2011, the only season of Morse's career that was notably above replacement level, Nationals Park had a higher HR park factor then Miller Park. Who plays in a hitters' paradise again?

For the record, I think Corey Hart blows. But I think it's great that you think AJ Cole's prospect status won't be hurt at all by a 7.82 ERA in A+ ball in 2012.

Weeks sucks at hitting and fielding. So basically combine Espinosa's bat and my defense and you've got Weeks. Gomez is less proven than Morse.

And yes, I'm pretty sure that the whopping 38 innings he had in High A ball won't hurt his stock. Just turned 21. Yea I'm thinking it's a little early tks be calling him a bust.

Do you notice how all the players you listed can play the field? Do you not understand why this makes them more valuable then a DH. All of the players listed have career, and single season WARs that blow Morse's out of the water. Please stop. Go watch basketball.

I mean are you really trying to argue that a DH is more valuable then a 3B despite having a lower OPS? Go watch basketball.

'A' for effort. If i'm a fan i'm happy with the they fact they've tried hard to make some moves to improve the offense, even if i'm not all that thrilled with what they ended up with.

The problem is you can't DH them all, or hide them all at first. Factor in Montero, and this club could come close to being as bad defensively as the Tigers were last season.
