Montero for Pineda

Assuming Montero turns into the player he is supposed to would you rather have the future ace in MP or the stud everyday player in Montero?

When I first heard of the trade I was :lol: at the Mariners but the more I consider it will having the everyday player be a better pickup than the guy throwing every 5 days?

Depends on whether or not Montero can truly be an everyday player, or just a DH. If he's only a designated hitter then he has to be David Ortiz/Edgar Martinez good to be of equal value to a top of the rotation pitcher. I like Montero and think he has star potential with the bat, and Seattle has plenty of other young arms coming up; they could part with Pineda easier than they could find a middle of the order hitter on the open market.

Due to park factors and division, the Yankees value strikeouts more than Seattle. And for obvious reasons, the Mariners value cheap offense more than the Yankees. The move made sense for both sides, unless Pineda keeps throwing 88-91 ...

If it's the future DH Montero it's more debatable. Depending on the upside of both I'd probably say Pineda but it's really close.

If it's the short term catcher Montero evolving into the future DH Montero absolutely slam dunk Montero.

People can say pitching wins championships or whatever, but unless you're Verlander/Halladay level of dominance offense is always more valuable.

I know one of the spects I like is James Paxton. Big strong power lefty. Reminds me delivery wise of Clayton Kershaw a bit IIRC

Hultzen should be ready by June or July, he's pretty polished. Hector Noesi is pretty intriguing too.

Was just reading about this last night in the Bill James Abstract about how predicting a young pitchers longevity/success can be tied to his K's per 9 number relative to the league averages at the time.

Interesting stuff and a great read.

I like the trade, we have enough great pitching prospects coming up and we had to do something with our offense. Lowest team batting average since the DH was added? :smh:

I'm not concerned with losing Pineda, especially in the ballpark the Mariners play in. Hopefully Jesus is our savior and shows his hitting ability the organization is banking on. I really like the Ackley/Smoak/Montero combo we have, and will be very excited when Hultzen (2nd overall pick) is ready to go.

I'm very excited the direction Mariners baseball is heading in these next couple years. It's been too painful to suck this bad for so long, and then trade away studs like Adam Jones and Mike Morse (why God why!?!?) for shit.

I don't trust Pineda to stay healthy, and he really needs another pitch. Sounds like he's been working on his change up but his velocity is down, 93mph I believe is where he was at. Pineda needs that 96-100mph FB or he really loses a lot of his effectiveness.

We're going to give Montero time at catcher, but I think regardless where we play him we did what was right for our roster as did the Yanks. The yanks can acquire a big bat a lot easier with the money they have. Grabbing a pitcher is harder.

Hultzen will be up this year, Paxton is a power lefty and Walker is probably going to be the best of the bunch.

Noesi is going to be MONEY in Safeco.
