GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It was bad enough for Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb that Oakland's Tommy Kelly sacked him in the end zone for a safety.


What the Raiders defensive end had to say about Kolb after Oakland's 31-27 loss to the Cardinals on Friday night probably hurt much worse.



"He is skittish. He is scared back there," Kelly said. "Anytime anybody gets close to him, he starts looking at the refs. As a defensive lineman, you love a quarterback like that. He ain't even trying to look at the routes no more. He is paying attention to us and you ain't going to get nothing done like that."


Kolb is fighting John Skelton for the starting quarterback job, and his night was a mix of good and bad.


Naturally, he didn't take kindly to Kelly's words Saturday.


"Scared? Scared of what?" Kolb told AZCardinals.com. "Taking a hit? I have never been afraid of anyone on the field and that will never change. That includes Number 93 (Kelly).


"There's a fine line between holding in the pocket and trying to escape to make a play. Tommy Kelly is too clueless to know the difference. I don't mind people criticizing my play. Don't ever question my toughness."


Skelton, meanwhile, made the most of a brief opportunity. He took just five snaps, but that was enough for him to throw the first touchdown pass for either quarterback candidate this preseason.


Skelton's 3-yard toss to a wide open Anthony Sherman was part of Arizona's 17-point second quarter.


Coach Ken Whisenhunt wasn't prepared to make any quarterback pronouncement.


"Not with only five plays for John," Whisenhunt said. "I think I'll have to get John some extended time this next week."


Skelton entered the game after Oakland fumbled the ball away at its 23. He completed 3 of 3 passes for 23 yards.


Whisenhunt said he didn't want the starting offensive line to play in the second half and he didn't want Skelton playing behind the backups.


Skelton said he understood, grudgingly.


"There's a little frustration but at the same time you kind of understand it," he said. "They want to give everyone an equal opportunity but at the same time you can't have the o-line in there for an extended period of time just to make everything equal. I kind of was a little mad about the decision but at the same time I understand it."


Kolb was 3 of 3 for 22 yards in Arizona's opening touchdown drive but was sacked by Kelly in the end zone on the Cardinals' next possession. He completed 3 of 6 passes and was sacked three times.


Raiders backup quarterback and former Cardinals starter Matt Leinart left the game in the third quarter with a cut on the index finger on his right (non-throwing) hand after he took a late hit from Arizona's Ricky Lumpkin, who was called for a personal foul on the play.


"We're going to get X-rays and see what happened, but we'll see what happens," Leinart said.

Well to be fair Rodgers has a little bit more guaranteed. Kolb's 2013 salary is incredibly high though so he'll definitely be cut before the new league year. To me it's amazing how much Kolb has regressed.

Are you fucking serious?!?! What the hell did he regress from? Sucking!?!?! He was an overrated draft pick, who threw a lot of passes for yards in a spread offense at Houston. If you look at his college highlight reel, 80% of his passes are withing 15 fucking yards! Reid picked a guy, for reasons I still don't know, with a noodle arm and shitty pocket presence and then tried to mold him into a pro QB, which he was never qualified for to begin with.

Kevin Kolb is Reid's second biggest failure and at the same time his biggest success/coup.

Somehow, timing or just plain luck, McNabb kept going down at about the same time the Birds would face weak defenses like the Chiefs and Saints (Yes they were weak, they still had most of their secondary out that game that Kolb picked em apart) and sold the entire league on this guys ceiling! The only reason majority of the Eagles die hard wanted Kolb in was they were tired of the same shit they were getting from McNabb for over a decade. It's not logical but when has a Philly fan been logical.

Somehow Kolb gets upsold for Cromartie and a 2nd rounder to the Cards, Whisenhunt should be fired after this season just for that trade. We turn that 2nd rounder into two solid picks this year and Kolb still can't figure out how to throw the ball in the same zipcode as arguably the best WR in the league.

You forgot Timmy Chang. Most of the guys you listed fall into the category of Chang as being in a good system. Michigan didn't have a good system and Brady is an anomaly.

That's because the O-line actually tried for Kurt Warner. It's something you'd have to watch alot of Cardinal games to really understand (and I unfortunately did before I figured out that whole first row thing), but it always blew my mind how much better they would block for Kurt Warner. They believed in him, the whole team, the whole city rallied around that guy. He's practically a saint here in Phoenix and his steady veteran leadership was something the Cardinals had never really experienced before, and haven't since.

I was obviously wrong on Kolb, but the fact remains that if they didn't go get him, even the $120 million contract wouldn't have kept Fitzgerald around. There were an awful lot of people who were convinced Kolb was the real deal. The fans weren't going to keep selling the stadium out to watch Derek Anderson play either. They had to take the shot.

The other major issue for the Cardinals is that they somehow believed that Whisenhunt was a guy who could develop a quarterback. He can't. He totally had just finished fucking up grooming a young guy. Matt Leinert had it figured out: Whizz needs to stick with a quarterback, ride or die. He pulls guys in and out of the game like the rich kid in school who stops sharing his toys at the slightest insult. Kolb was another guy who was pretty green, didn't know the offense, plays behind a shitty line has been in "competition" with roster filler types since. He plays scared now, has no confidence or swag left, he's afraid of fucking up because one wrong move could be the straw that broke the camels back.

If they're gonna keep Whizz after this season, they need to get him a veteran quarterback who doesn't need alot of coaching. If the plan is to bring in a young guy to build around, they need to shitcan the entire front office and bring in people who have a reputation for being good at that type of thing.

It's less about numbers and more about being totally unprepared for a pro style offense IMO. Lots of guys have put up numbers in the wide open Big 12 for years and then shown up to the pros with no idea what the hell is going on around them.

Bradford has come the closest to not being terrible so far but the jury is still out on him as well.
