Sources: Drop in salary affects buyout

Spanish star Ricky Rubio's move to the NBA has been complicated by his sliding to fifth in the draft, but the only options he's currently considering are playing in Minnesota or returning to DKV Joventut, sources said on Tuesday.

Had Rubio been a top three pick, he could have more easily afforded to pay Joventut to release him, a source said. But the difference in salary between third and fifth in the draft is roughly $600,000 a year. Joventut reportedly is asking for no less than $4 million for his release.

Going to another European team is not a realistic option because that team would want a long-term commitment from Rubio and his desire remains to play in the NBA, a source said. Whether he can do that next season or when his Joventut contract expires two years from now is the question.

In any case, Rubio apparently has no objections to playing in Minnesota.

"This isn't about Minnesota," a source said. "It's about the buyout."

Although the Wolves drafted another point guard in Syracuse's Jonny Flynn on June 25, a source said Minnesota is dedicated to having Rubio on the team next season.

Let me get this straight.. the T'Wolves want him on the court next season, the fans sure as hell want him, and Rubio seems to want to, so why doesn't Minnesota management get involved here and pay part of the buy-out? Seems like a win-win-win situation.

I remember this from when the Pistons drafted Darko, a team can only pay up to $500,000 towards a buyout without it taking away from the players salary. If he were to strike a deal with DKV for like 3 million dollars, Rubio would be roughly able to break even and make no money, but lose no money, while playing in the NBA.

The T-Wolves can only pay $500,000 of the buyout. That's the cap.

The NBA should allow them to pay the entire buyout, so NBA fans can see a potentially exciting player.

I respect and agree with the salary cap, but this situation (and others like it) are unique.

the idea im guessing is to keep big market teams from "buying" up all the global talent.

Update, the exec for Minnesota is heading over to Spain to talk to DKV. Right now, Rubio would have to pay 6.6 MILLION DOLLARS to his team, but they are hoping for some agreement to do it for less.

Would you pay to work at your job? If the Timberwolves can persuade the Spanish team to lower the buyout where Rubio can make a profit in the NBA then I would expect Rubio to play in Minnesota. If he doesnt play after that happens then everyone should start calling him a bitch.

Do you think that if New York picked him his dad would announce that he would probally be returning to Spain to play for the next year or two. In my opinion the answer would be no. No because he would make WAYYYYY more money in NY or LA then he would in Minnesota . Would you really pay to play in Minnesota? Fuck I wouldnt pay to play in any job but at least if he went to NY the endorsments would be alot higher than in Minny . See I think thats a total copout. The dude barely speaks english, how many U.S. endorsements is he gonna get, at least initially? If you are good enough, you can get big endorsements no matter where you play. K.G. was the posterboy for Adidas when he played in Minnesota.

An average/good player of Rubio's mould(espically one from Europe) would be jizzed over in NY by everybody and their mothers . In Minnesota if you are average/good you will be much less known .

He doesnt need to speak English to get deals , there is many clever ways these days to market a player without him even opening his mouth almost

K,G also got deals because he was a superstar of the league , Rubio will never be that in mine and most peoples opinion so he needs a big market to fully whore himself around for as much money as possible

fargo really fucked over minnesota.....most of the people in the twin cities don't talk like that and almost all of southern minnesota doesn't talk like, its mostly up north....now you wanna hear a fucked up accent go to the UP of michigan...those uppers are fucking weird sounding.

I used to hate the guy, then the details came out about how much he would have to pay and how adamant his old team is about the buy out. Really you can't blame the guy in this situation, if he gets picked by a big market(which everyone thoughts would happen) then he can afford to play next season.

But no it doesn't always work out that way and he got picked by the T'Wolves who have a small market and can't provide the type of deals he needs to pay off his buy-out.

Put yourself in his shoes for one second, do you PAY to play basketball and take the risk of having an injury in the progress? Or do you stick it out in Spain and get paid for the time being then eventually make the move to the big show?

He is just covering his ass in all aspects and I don't blame him. Anyone who calls Rubio a bitch for doing what hes doing is being a hypocrite. You would do the same thing and you know it.
