I posted this at another site so I figured I'd post it here. What actors/actresses performance have been the most underrated? This can either be underrated in general or underrated in the sense of the actor/actress' career overshadowing the performance.

You'll notice I did not include actresses...yeah, my list got actor-heavy so I just stuck with it.

This is hard. Even if a movie sucks a known actor will get their credit if they did a good job acting.

For instance Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth The Golden Age.
 
First two I thought of after looking at my collection were Peter Ustinov in Spartacus and Mercedes Ruehl in The Fisher King. Then I looked them up and found that they both won Oscars for those performances so they don't count.

So I'll just go back to my default position and say Timothy Carey in every role he's ever played.

Hardly anyone has ever heard of him but that man stole every single scene in every movie he was in, and that involves wrestling scenes away from the likes of Marlon Brando, Sterling Hayden, Kirk Douglas and James Coburn. He probably would have done the same to Al Pacino and Robert De Niro as well if he hadn't turned down roles in the first two Godfather films.

Edit: Found another one, Shelley Winters in Lolita and Night of the Hunter. You could argue that it's the same role twice but she held her own against James Mason, Peter Sellers and Robert Mitchum yet didn't get any awards for either of them.

Yeah, American Splendor and Sideways are both great as well. He at least got awards for John Adams, but he needs to be credited for more of his work.
 
Yeah I was just about to bring up Gary Oldman in Leon The Professional. Also, Edward Norton in The Score.
