Mount Cody Weighs in at 370

Terrence "Mount" Cody, the mountain in the middle of Alabama's defense this year, tipped the scales at 370 pounds during weigh-ins Monday for the Senior Bowl in Mobile -- which is not a good thing.

"It hurts," NFL network draft analyst Mike Mayock said of Cody's weigh-in. "And it a wasn't clean 370."

Cody, who was listed at 354 prior to the 2009 season and at 365 on the Senior Bowl's initial roster, is already somewhat limited in the draft by the prevalent view that he is best suited as a 3-4 nose tackle, when many NFL teams play a 4-3. Mayock said his weight and conditioning would be the top questions he'd need to answer during Senior Bowl week, which is essentially a job interview for April's NFL draft.

"How many quality snaps you get out of him is going to be directly proportionate to what kind of shape he's in," Mayock said of Cody.

I was hoping the Bucs would hire Cowher and we'd draft Cody. Cody could go either way, but if he's in the right atmosphere I think he'll do well.

I wonder who will draft him?

Nobody in the first round imo ... if he does it will be to a 3-4 team late on .

I would take him in a heart beat. Take him in the 2nd round and play him only on 1st and 2nd downs and in goal line situations. With him up front our Linebackers will actually do something.

If he's motivated, he going to be really good.. the problem is - that's a major question left to be answered at this point.

if he was motivated he would have been working on his weight by now. And if weight is something that just won't go down then you need to attempt to improve elsewhere. It seems to me that Cody is taking this all for granted, and it will hurt him.

He reminds me of Shaun Rogers a bit.

The whole 3-4 vs 4-3 thing is overblown. There's no reason he can't be a 4-3 nose tackle. Play him as a tilt nose tackle and let him slam into the side of the center all game.

I can see him slipping on draft day (ala Rogers) and ending up as a late 2nd/early 3rd type of player. Somewhere where his contract won't be a liability if he busts.

I doubt (pending any significant performance in the Senior Bowl, Combine, etc.) any team will gamble with him in the first round. I see him as an early-mid second round pick.

It takes more then just being a fat ass to be a great 3-4 NT.

I think he's not going to do much in the NFL. I don't have any empirical evidence, but I think that guys who are big in college can become fat in the NFL as they get older and still be effective (like a Ted Washington or Keith Traylor). I think guys who are already fat in college don't have success in the NFL. Either they just get fatter and suck (William Perry) or their bodies break down right away (Gilbert Brown).
