Movie Critics

I was watching the latest Kevin Smith Q&A entitled Burn in Hell(Netflix) and he said something very interesting. He talked about taking on critics over his movie Cop Out and that critics claimed to have "made him". A lot of people listen to critics when deciding to go see a movie. Oscar buzz also always helps a movie. I do think that a movie has to be worth a shit too and even if crapfest blockbuster popcorn movies suck, people will go see them because shit blows up or it's CGI'd out the ass. But it does bring up an interesting thought and question. Do critics make movies successful? And I guess this point is moot a lot of times in the dvd/online arena with examples of movies like Austin Powers and Office Space.

Like QBs, movie critics get too much credit or they get blamed too much.

It can never be blanketed into one or the other.

I think critics are the last line of defense for saving/making a movie. Trailers,word of mouth, and box office numbers are all more important. If you don't have any of that, then chances are a bunch of great reviews alone won't save you. It would take Oscar buzz on top of those reviews.

I think bad reviews hurt more than good reviews help.

Bad reviews scare people away, good reviews don't matter unless you're on the fence to begin with.

I think W2BTD has it right. Bad reviews make people say "I heard that sucked" when deciding to go see a movie. But I will say that in this day & age with so many people downloading movies, reviews have less of an effect than they used to. People see a trailer they like, find a torrent and check it out since it either costs them nothing or very very little.
