What You Need to Run the 3-3-5:
DT that can clog up the line/DE's that can get to the outside - In my opinion, this is the most important part of the 3-3-5 defense. These guys are in charge of keep the QB under wraps, and being able to stop the run effectively, and that is hard to do with only three guys. You will need a big, heavy, strong defensive tackle, so he can clog up the middle of the line, and potentially stop any run that comes near him. For the defensive ends you will need freak athletes, guys who can move well enough to stay with a scrambling quarterback, and fast enough to cut off a running back trying to make it to the outside. If your defensive linemen don't do their job, using this defense is pointless, as you will be stuck trying new things to generate heat, and get some pressure on the quarterback.
Athletic linebackers - Once again, this system thrives on being athletic. These guys are going to be blitzing through the gaps, and covering the middle and outside parts of the field, the parts where you need to be able to move well, and stick with a receiver making a move over the middle. If you're linebackers can't stick in their zone, and cover their guy into the next zone, you will be in some big trouble. Especially with this year's game, covering the middle of the field is so important, if you control the center of the field, you are forcing the guy to throw to the outside, or try to bomb it out deep, which with the improvement of man defense, is harder to do this year, and could easily result in an interception. These guys aren't going to be making huge game changing plays, but they are going to be a big cog in the machine that is your defense.
Aware defensive backs/safties- Once your linemen and linebackers do their job, there really isn't much for the offense to do, so they are going to try and force the ball somewhere, of throw to the flats. If your corner back is aware, he could easily pick off a ball to the flats. The reason you want speed corners is that if they try to bomb it out, and burn you deep, which will happen often in this defense, you are going to need someone to keep up with the receiver, and swat it down, or pick it off. The hard hitting safeties are for throws over the deep middle, a lot of times in this game, a guy could role out and try to hit you over the top, because that has become a habit for many players. If you have hard hitting guys waiting for them, they will more than likely not throw the ball, or when they do, you can break it up easily.
