Buzzman’s Most Anticipated Movies of Q2-2012
To get it out of the way right off the back, the first quarter was complete garbage until a string of momentum in March made up for it. There are way too many shitty films that came out in those first two months that even the film fanatics would have a hard time naming three good movies from that stretch of time. Once March hit, some better stuff started coming such as 21 Jump Street, Jeff Who Lives at Home, Goon, and The Hunger Games. It was a month I’d say that dominated the first quarter. For the second quarter, I don’t see that momentum carrying over until we get to June. Sure there are a few good looking titles in April and May, but in between them, things look like crap. Once June hit, every week looks like it could be a real winner. Don’t be surprise to see a bulk of the films on this see in that month. Without wasting any more time, here is my list.
#9 | Titanic 3D (April 4th)
I really do love Titanic. More than a few people give me shit for loving it, but there are a lot of things to like about it. I love that I am getting a chance to finally see it in a theater. The 3D aspect I could care less about, but from what I hear, James Cameron didn’t half ass it for a cash grab, but spent millions and put a lot of time in making it better than the shit we get today, so I am curious to see how well it works out. I’m just glad it gives me an excuse to watch the film once again. It has been too long.
#8 | American Reunion (April 6th)
I made this list beforehand, but I actually already saw this movie and figured I’d keep it right where I had it. I wanted to see this again just from the pure nostalgia the trailer gave off on me. Watching it made me realize just how much I have enjoyed the series and these characters. It’s great to have them all back instead of those shitty straight to DVD films. Stifler is an iconic character of our generation and I couldn’t wait to see him grace the screen at least one more time. I love his shenanigans.
#7 | The Five Year Engagement (April 27th)
The two leads are two of the most charming actors in the business. Jason Segal and Emily Blunt feel like the dream couple of just awesome people. This film doesn’t look like it will run away and be something great, but it does seem like it will be extremely solid. Another addition into a string of great comedies featuring Jason Segal. The trailer has some good light hearted jokes and atmosphere. Did I also mention the awesome Alison brie and Chris Pratt are prominent supporting cast members? The cast alone has me buzzing around the film.
#6 | Safety, Not Guaranteed (June 8th)
Ever since I became a fan of Parks and Recreation (which was just a few months ago) I fell in love with Aubrey Plaza. She has this cute, bored, demeanor about her that makes me like her so much. Since then I;ve followed this movie pretty much the whole through its time in Sundance up until its eventual release. From what I gather from reviews and the pretty good trailer, it’s a charming little romance movie that has an ambiguous ending for the better. It has me extremely curious an I have a hard time picturing myself not enjoying a movie I have anticipated for so much.
#5 | Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1st)
I think the clear cut winner of the Snow White movies was revealed when both of the trailers premiered within a week of each other. One was a cheesy, colorful, looking shitfest, while the other was this, a Lord of the Rings style retelling of the fairy tale. Charlize Theron could not have looked more sexier in that trailer, Chris Hemsworth looked badass, and environment had an epic feel to it. The only real question mark was Snow White herself. Kristen Stewart has been hidden in the shadows of the market campaign, and I wonder if that’s because she’s a weakness or it’s a play to distinguish itself from the Twilight franchise. Regardless this is the one film on this list that I think can end up tanking, but for now the expectations are high.
#4 | The Avengers (May 4th)
For many this will be the #1 film. Only really Batman seems to have more buzz. I have warmed up to the movie a lot more than when that first teaser played at the end of Captain America, but I am still a tiny bit weary that some of the added characters could become dead weight. The fact that Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye has no dialect and Scarlett Johansson’s super power is a gun, I don’t see where they can go with them). Despite, I love the new trailer and such. I think it sets up the epic feel and was super stoked to learn that the best villain from the Marvel Movie Universe, Loki, is returning as the head honcho. I think Whedon has something hid up his sleeve though. The trailers show an army of Aliens of sort fighting the Avengers, but I cannot help but think Whedon has a secret trick up his sleeve. We’ll have to find out on May 4th though.
#3 | Cabin in the Woods (April 13th)
The other Joss Whedon project is so dearly overlooked. I thought the film sounded very generic while its news of delayment hit us, but once they got a solid release date, the information started flowing. The bizarre trailer says a whole lot without actually revealing anything, and I heard that’s a great fucking thing. Then there was the annual screeners to the film and not only were cirtics going wild, but Twitter exploded with an insane amount of positive feedback for the film. So much so, Josh Whedon made a YouTube video asking the early viewers of the film to not post any spoilers and asked future audience members not to read them because it is a treat you won’t want ruined for you. You should come to expect nothing less from Whedon, and I am just about dying for a chance to see it.
#2 | Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (June 22nd)
This is a film everyone will probably be surprised to see this high on the list, but as most of you know I love indie romances. LOVE THEM. If they are done right, they are the most re-watchable films that will usually leave you in a great mood. The film flew under the radar for me, but once the trailer hit, it won me over. I think this film at worst will be good, but fully expect to love it. Steve Carroll looks in fine CSL form here and Kiera Knightly looks so damn cute here. She has a look of little makeup and undone hair that is far sexier than her piled on looks from her more recent appearances. I have an idea of how the film is going to end, but I am hoping it can pull off something that surprises me. It’s all I can really hope for.
#1 | Prometheus (June 8th )
There is no debate on what the #1 film should have been not only on my list, but for everyone else as well. Prometheus from the beginning was always going to be an amazing movie, but with the new trailers and marketing, it has actually jumped into the best of the year category already. The trailers look phenomenal (based on the trailer I provided, it’d be #1 on my list for the entire year) has a dynamite cast full of up and comers and undervalued talent, has the budget of a blockbuster but the feel of passions project, and the fucking sound is incredible. I recently went to an IMAX to see a really shitty movie, but they played the trailer of this beforehand and it totally convinced me I had to see it there. It comes at you in a way I’ve never experienced, and I cannot wait until June 8th comes because I’ll be there sitting in uncontrollable excitement.
