Nets Pursuing Josh Smith Trade

The Brooklyn Nets are aggressively pursuing a trade for Atlanta Hawks star forward Josh Smith, league sources told ESPN.

The two teams are engaged in discussions, but one source said while "there has been lots of talk, nothing is close yet."

As the NBA's Feb. 21 trade deadline nears, Brooklyn is proving to be one of the most active teams in the league. As reported by ESPN.com on Friday, sources said the Nets also are talking with the Charlotte Bobcats about a Kris Humphries-for-Ben Gordon trade.

While the Nets certainly want Gordon, sources said acquiring Smith is their higher priority. A trade for Smith would seemingly kill a deal for Gordon, because Humphries is one of the players being discussed with Atlanta.

The Nets are willing to give up Humphries and second-year shooting guard MarShon Brooks for Smith. But it almost certainly will take more than a Humphries-Brooks combination to pry Smith away from Atlanta, and one source said the Hawks want Brooklyn's first-round pick.

Some scenarios that have been discussed include the Hawks' Anthony Morrow, who played the past two seasons with the Nets, returning to the club.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported Saturday that the Hawks want a young center in return for Smith.

The Nets may have to get a third team involved to pull off a trade for Smith.

Smith will become a free agent this summer, and Atlanta is deciding whether to trade him before the deadline. One source close to the situation estimated there is a 60 percent chance the Hawks will move him.

If the Hawks don't trade Smith, they risk losing him for nothing as a free agent. Atlanta could re-sign Smith, but he wants close to maximum-salary money, if not the max.

One school of thought has the Hawks keeping Smith in order to make themselves more attractive to Smith's longtime friend and fellow Atlanta native, Dwight Howard.

Howard, who is struggling through a nightmarish season with the Los Angeles Lakers, will become a free agent this summer, and Atlanta will join Dallas and Houston in offering him a max-salary contract. Sources have said Howard has little interest in playing in Atlanta.

We are working with Josh on his shot selection. It's an evolutionary process. We're constantly seeing improvement in that area. Josh needs to understand what types of shot we need in certain situations. It's a constantly evolving process and we are working with him on it ... ​

... Thank this guy. He says shit like this after EVERY.FUCKING.GAME. Doesn't tell Josh before or during the game to stop chucking ... but after he'll be sure to tell the media that we are "working on it" ...

Because that Josh Smith/JJ combo has worked before.

I simply don't like JJ. Ugh. Besides being an isolation hog I feel Brooks can provide a bit more efficiency while he learns how to play defense (the only thing JJ really has over Brooks). MB won't get a fair share though.

And Joey hasn't even been a good defender in a couple of seasons. He used to be a great all around player but now he's just a low-efficiency, rather one dimensional, aging wing.

The problem is he starting improbably making a lot of them at the start of last season, so he kept taking more of them. I always say the worst outcome of a Josh Smith jumper is that he makes it, because it will only beget more attempts. In 2010 or 2011 he actually went the whole season with single digit 3-pt. attempts, took like five total all year. But after a summer of "working on his all around game" he got it in his head he was good at shooting long jumpers again.

So outrageous because that's the lowest efficiency shot for any shooters, but especially bad ones, and most especially bad shooters who also happen to be elite finishers at the basket.

It's an okay shot if your Kevin Durant, Dirk or Tim Duncan and hit like 85% of them. Even then, yes, it's the lowest efficiency shot and largely the worst shot in basketball. If you're awful at shooting it, you shouldn't even attempt more than 1-2 throughout a game.

The Nets should read a book on how to build a team. Adding Josh Smith does not add anything to this team. They seem to be just trying to acquire "names" with bad contracts or giving them bad contracts.....ala Zeke with the Knicks.
