Network Connection issues! (Please help)

Ok, so I rarely play online multiplayer games. I'm pretty much a single player guy. But I recently bought Killzone 2 and I'm hooked on multiplayer, that is when I can actually stay online. I'm constantly getting booted from the servers and completely logged out of the PSN. Sometimes I get a message saying there is a DNS error. I did some snooping and it appears that I will probably have to create a static IP address for my PS3. Well, at least I hope that's all I have to do. But my problem is this...won't that screw up any connection I have with my 360? I have no issues with my 360 at all. I have everything set to automatic for the 360 and everything works fine. I only have issues when I play online multiplayer on the PS3. I think the last time I played multiplayer was with the first MotorStorm and I had the same problems.
I should also note that we have two 360's, two PS3's and a Wii connected wirelessly in my house. I don't want to screw the other consoles up just to play Killzone.
I guess ultimately I'll have to obtain static IP's for each console?

If you configure a static address for one console, that won't affect any other console/device on your network.

Really? But you have to change settings within your router so why wouldn't that mess things up for the other consoles?

I'm crossing my fingers right now because my buddy told me that he disabled that info bar in the yop right corner of the XMB nad that resolved the same issue he had. I disabled it and I have plyed two games of Resistance 2 (one game was to 360 kills!) and two games of KZ2 and I haven't had any problems.

Nope. All you would be doing is setting a constant address for your one PS3 console. This has zero effect on anything else in your home network.


Your home router acts as a DHCP server. DHCP is the process that assigns IP addresses to your devices within your network. By default your addresses are assigned dynamically, which means they are assigned whatever address is available (tho typically they receive the same one if it's available). Your router (which I'd assume has very little configuration) has a range of addresses it will use within your network settings and all you'd be doing is picking one of those addresses and giving it to the PS3 and only that PS3 every single time. Thus it's static and no longer dynamic....could assist with your problem, but it looks like you may have figured it out.

I did that with my PS3 a few months ago and it just made things worse.
I used to have the same problems Twigg is referring to. Luckily it doesn't happen as much as it used to, but the static IP config/DMZ setup just made things worse for me.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I had even more problems when I tried that. When I tried setting up a static IP I couldn't get online with my PS3 or 360 so I switched it back to auto.

It's so weird though. Ever since I switched that Info Board off I haven't had a single problem. ***knocks on wood***

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I had even more problems when I tried that. When I tried setting up a static IP I couldn't get online with my PS3 or 360 so I switched it back to auto.

It's so weird though. Ever since I switched that Info Board off I haven't had a single problem. ***knocks on wood***

If you set up the PS3 statically correctly and DMZ that IP then your PS3 will have all ports open which will be like a direct to modem connection. With all the routers nowadays a lot of these problems with connection issues is due to many people having their connections set up weird and their PS3 not having access to every port available.

In a nutshell this is what you want to do. For your specific router you will need to look up DMZ

First of all you need to know what your DHCP range is on your router. For me my IPs were 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.100

So what you need to do is select an IP out of that range. For my consoles I always select 192.168.2.250 because it is easy for me to remember.

Next step is on your PC, open the command prompt and enter ipconfig /all
Write down all of that information like gateway and DNS.

You just take that information and throw it into your PS3 when you manually set up your IP. Make sure that the IP address you assign is out of the DHCP range.

Once you do that you go into your router and somewhere in your menu you find DMZ and put in the IP address of your PS3.

idk if I made this sound hard or what but hit me up on AIM for more details. It is very basic and not hard to do but this is the way to set up your console and despite what Twigg and Chodite say, if done correctly it WILL make your shit work.

actually what we are discussing has zero bearing on being either a wired or wireless network. it applies to both.
