The NFL draft is big. It could be getting bigger. Much bigger. The NFL inched its annual draft toward prime time last weekend. Next April, the NFL is considering giving the first round its own day -- and a prime-time television slot. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday the league was discussing the possibility of staging the first round of the 2010 draft on a Thursday evening, the second and third rounds Friday evening and the final four rounds Saturday. The event would remain the cable television domain of ESPN and the NFL Network. "We're more confident now, with the timing of the first round, that it can fit a 3 1/2-hour window," Goodell said. "We think it can be very appealing from a fan's standpoint and an audience standpoint. "We'll talk to our teams about it. We have to see what impact this would have on them. But I think it has potential." The NFL has been pondering such a move for a few years, but there was one major obstacle -- those cumbersome six-hour first rounds. Goodell and the league had to figure out a way to shrink the opening round to fit into an abbreviated prime-time window.

I know the NFL is popular but it would be tough to go up against primetime network TV for ratings on those nights. Plus who carries it? ESPN already has baseball on those nights sometimes. PLUS with the NBA and NHL playoffs in those night slots the NFL woul dbe hard pressed to get ratings they are looking for.

The NFL Draft is fun but not sure if it's good programming for primetime weeknight viewing.
 
More people would watch it but less people would go. Either way is kinda alright with me, but I'd rather go to the Draft on a Saturday because if you're traveling you'd have to skip work/school the next day.

Or I can DVR the Draft and watch The Office with my wife etc. and watch the Draft when I have more free time...on the weekend. It works both ways.

You're going up against a lot more bigger guns on the week night than you are on the weekends. Peoples viewing habits on weekends are more suited for the draft. They have the time to sit around for hours and watch it. Weeknights not so much. That's why most primetime shows don't exceed 30 minutes to an hour. Weekends are where you see bigger ratigns for longer running programs etc.

The NFL Draft is ratings king where it is now. it should stay. If it wants to go up against The Office, Grey's Anatomy etc and the other network giants it will lose.
 
I would love to come in this thread and complain and say something like, "Isn't the draft big enough" or "I have better things to do than to watch the draft in primetime" or even "Its fine the way it is," but realistically I'd just adjust my schedule accordingly and enjoy it. However, I will say I'm not one of those crazy fans who watches every round of the draft, so they'd probably lose me after Friday and possibly Thursday.

Trust me, been working in the media (Radio and TV) for about 5 years now and the bolded part is the most important thing you said in a way. Weeknight viewing is geared toward "family" or "date" viewing. That's why you see all the reality shows, The Office, Grey's etc on for 30 minutes to an hour. Everybody wants things in smaller doses on the weeknights. Even one round of the NFL Draft is considered long viewing for that slot. esepcially for as "specialized" viewing as it is. Sure the NCAA Tournament can pull good ratings for it's championship in primetime but a game is much more easily picked up by the casual fan than a Draft is.

For example, my fiancee is not the biggest baseball fan but I can get her to watch the Red Sox/Cubs with me on TV b/c it's a game and she "gets it". No way in hell I could get her to watch the draft with me for longer than 30 minutes. It's more specialized, in depth, niche viewing.

I also think that dragging out the draft and milking it too much may hurt it's viewership among it's normal fans as well. How many of us have 2-3 nights free during a week to devote to NFL draft coverage? it's much easier to have it over two days on a weekend and be able to flip it on etc and check in periodically than to want to follow it pick by pick over 3-4 nights.

I'm all for the draft doing something to cover the round more throughly. I hate how after Round 1 basically all the coverage is about what happened in Rd 1 and you don't get analysis of 95% of the players that go after pick #32. But I think that can be addressed in the format it is in now and corrections can be made without stretching the draft out and battling network primetime TV.

Agreed. Trey Wingo constantly mentioning how long they have been at the draft is lame. The draft is getting shorter Trey. Deal with it. I don't know how the draft isn't covered better after Rd 1. If you think about it you have "breaking news" of a new pick every 5-10 minutes. You have two draft gurus who devote an entire season to the draft. You should be able to cover and analize every single pick of the draft. Thrwo in some interviews with coaches, scouts, etc but you should be able to cover every single pick and player. Maybe not film on every guy but give us something on every one. Not a blurb of the last 5 picks and talk about 1 of them.

Or they'd go the opposite way with the smaller time frame and choose only to focus on the bigger news stuff and cram that into the smaller time frame and not "waste their time" doing pick by pick on kids most people don't know.
 
Football fans will watch the draft no matter what day it's on. They could have the 1st round at 3AM on a Monday and people will watch.

Face it, the NFL has us all by the balls.
 
Honestly this is where the NFL draft coverages fails. The NFL Draft is not for the casual fan. Don't treat it like it is. It's an event for the hardcore fans. Program it so it comes off as such. Give us details and analysis on each player. I don't need 78 stories on Stafford, or Sanchez. You have all the resources there to cover every player and all 7 rounds. Do it. Cover Rd 1 when it's RD 1 then move on.

Well, ESPN directs it at the casual fan...because that is the audience that ESPN directs itself at, the casual sports fan...NFLN directs their coverage in a more hardcore direction with a lot of in depth talk and analysis.

I didn't want much more than 5 minutes of ESPN coverage this year, and I assume that was the theme there. But I watched NFLN and it was pretty damn comprehensive from top to bottom.

I followed it online mostly this year so when the picks were made I could google guys etc.

Did NFL Netowrk stream online like they did last year for free? (That happened right?)

But at least they were getting around to each pick it seemed - there just was no structure, so you had no idea when they were going to talk about the guy your team just took.

It was good on NFLN...best I've seen in a while.

Issue was that they didn't have a whole lot of film from some of the players.

Really got obscure on Day 2.
 
Really terrible coverage since they shortened the pick times.

Used to be lots of videos of guys through the first 3 rounds. Now just short summaries of the last handful of picks. REALLY lousy compared to what it used to be.
 
And, drop the during draft interviews from each team's facility...they're all the same.

Talking Head: And we're on now with the newest [team mascot], [player name]. How's it feel to be a [team mascot]?
Player: It feels great. It's what I've been working for, and it's good that all the effort has paid off.
TH: So, what's the first thing you're going to buy?
Player: I'm gonna buy my [family member] a new [property].
TH: What are you going to do once you get into camp with your new teammates in [city name]?
Player: I'm going to come in, put my nose to the grindstone, and show them that I'm willing to do whatever it takes to win.
TH: Thanks, [player name]. Congratulations again.
Player: Thank you.

Newsflash to Gooddell and ESPN, the draft isn't supposed to be about getting ratings. It's supposed to be about hardcore football fans (college and pro really) watching to see who their favorite teams pick, or where their favorite players go.

Godell said himself the NFL is trying to become more global so its not just really popular in one or 2 countries. Since they started having 1 game a season in england the popularity has sky rocketted....there was 400,000 applications sent in for tickets to watch the shitty Chargers v Saints.

Having the superbowl in a different country is dumb as hell in my opinion tho.
