With NFL draft day 2009 rapidly approaching, I always find it fun to look back at past drafts and see how teams really did. The day after any draft there will be grades for every team, everywhere you look. However, I'm a firm believer that you really can't judge a draft for at least five seasons.

Keeping that in mind, every day from now until the day before the draft we'll take a look at a past NFL draft & see how teams really did. We'll start with the 1993 NFL Draft (click here).

The recently retired Drew Bledsoe was the #1 overall pick, selected by the New England Patriots. Though I don't think he's a HOF caliber QB, he had a very nice career. He even led the Pats to a SB appearance & had a hand in getting them to another. You could do a lot worse with the first pick.

Pretty solid 1st round that included Garrison Hearst, Curtis Conway, Willie Roaf, Lincoln Kennedy, Jerome Bettis, Dana Stubblefield & a number of others who made a mark on the league.

As usual the QB position provided the biggest bust as #2 overall pick Rick Mirer never panned out. On the other hand, one of the better QB's in this draft, Mark Brunell went in the 5th rd to Green Bay. He was selected 2 full rounds after "star" QB Billy Joe Hobert. More on this position, later.

Michael Strahan went in the 2nd round to the NY Giants & was the 5th DE taken overall.

Tampa Bay nabbed John Lynch at the end of the 3rd rd. A little earlier in that round, the Broncos got K Jason Elam who developed kicking in Mile High Stadium to an artform.

New England drafted one of the best receivers in team history, Troy Brown in the 8th rd.

That 8th round was pretty strong (yes, there were 8 rounds back then) as it also included Jessie Armstead, Blaine Bishop, Elvis Grbac & Trent Green who was taken by San Diego 3rd pick from the bottom. That's more significant this season because the 8th was now the final round.

I love quarterbacks. With so many intangibles that go into making a successful one, It's also the hardest position to draft. So I really like to see how that position fared in the draft more than any other.

Ranking the QBs in the 1993 draft:

1. Drew Bledsoe (Rd 1, 1st overall to New England Patriots)
2. Mark Brunell (Rd 5, 118th overall to Green Bay Packers)
3. Trent Green (Rd 8, 222nd overall to San Diego Chargers)
4. Elvis Grbac (Rd 8, 219th overall to San Francisco 49ers)
5. Rick Mirer (Rd 1, 2nd overall to Seattle Seahawks)
6. Billy Joe Hobert (Rd 3, 58th overall to Los Angeles Raiders)
7. Alex Van Pelt (Rd 8, 216th overall to Pittsburgh Steelers)
8. Gino Toretta (Rd 7, 192nd overall to Minnesota Vikings)

With Green & Grbac both being drafted in the 8th round but both having decent careers (plus Brunell in the 5th) it was a better draft for QBs than people thought it would be. Still, half the class of '93 was dead weight.
 
Alex Van Pelt spent a number of years with Buffalo as a backup and occassional starter. I think he performed very well considering he was an 8th round pick. To call him 'dead weight' is a bit harsh.
 
Will Shields was the best pick in the 3rd round. The Chiefs need to hit on another player like that in the 3rd this year.
 
I like your report of the 93 draft. At least it got me thinking about the past, which I enjoy as much as you do obviously. What made you go back to the 93 draft anyhow? That just seems to be an obscure year. Not an even number, it wasn't like going back 10 years to 99, or 15 years to 94. Was it Bledsoe?

I'm not exactly a fan of Bledsoe but I've defended him against many a Bledsoe hater in my time. He was better than most at least. But you're right he wasn't HOF.

Maybe, but compare him with the other 2 qbs drafted in the same round. A world of difference.

The logic is simply by doing one year per day from now until draft day will put at 2003 or 5 full seasons since that draft which I think is the least amount of time that should pass before we judge one.

1998 and 1999 were the "Billy Joe" years for the Saints. Danny Wuerfell was also on the team, and while he wasn't officially a "Billy Joe," he played like one.

Could that be the worst QB corps a team's had this generation? It's gotta be that, or the horrendous Shane Mathews/Wuerffel/Pat Ramsey trio Spurrier attempted to win with.

What about the Scott Mitchell/Frank Reich/Matt Blundin group the 97 Lions had. Even the next season when Charlie Batch took over as a 2nd round rookie that group sucked.

Wuerffel was also part of the Billy Joe Hobert/Wuerffel/Shuler/Nussmeier corps in New Orleans.

I don't know which group sucks worse but they all look bad to me.

Sorry, have to throw this group out. At least Mitchell & Reich had done something in the NFL.

I'll see that trio and raise you Jonathan Quinn, Craig Krenzel, and Chad Hutchinson circa 2004 for the Bears.
 
The 2005 49ers and 2006 Bucs were pretty bad but i have to say that the trio of those redskins definitely takes the cake.

This trio is the worst, because none of the guys were good in the past and none of the guys were recent high draft picks by the Bears. The Bears simply elected to go with three of the worst QBs in the NFL, none of whom had any potential for improvement and none of whom had any past success.

Yeah. Quinn was a FA that was brought over rom KC with terry Shea basically on the work of Shea tlling the Bears he would be a capable backup in the NFL if our starter went down despite him only starting 3 games prior to 2004 and he was drafted in 1998.

Krenzel was a 6th Rd Draft pick who was never meant to ever see the field especially as a rookie

Hutchinson was running a surf shop in California when the Bears signed him in the late weeks of the season.
