Skipping right along to the 2001 NFL Draft.
Of course, this is the Michael Vick draft. San Diego makes what turns out to be the wise choice & traded the top pick to Atlanta who took Vick. The Chargers parlayed that into LaDainian Tomlinson in rd 1 & Drew Brees in rd 2.
Wideouts got a lot of attention in rd 1 as well. 6 of them went. The most talented one, Koren Robinson (Seattle) can't stay out of trouble. Three more were busts, David Terrell (Bears), Rod Gardner (Redskins) & Freddie Mitchell (Eagles) - well, Mitchell did have that one catch. One, Santana Moss (Jets) has turned into a stud after leaving the team that drafted him. The other has stayed where he started & been flat out awesome the last few years, including helping his team win the SB - Reggie Wayne (Colts).
Seattle reached high for a guard & it paid off when they got Steve Hutchinson.
Other notables taken in the 1st round include: DE Justin Smith (Bengals), DT Richard Seymour (Patriots), DE Andre Carter (49ers), LB Dan Morgan (Panthers), DT Marcus Stroud (Jaguars), DT Casey Hampton (Steelers), RB Deuce McAllister (Saints) and TE Todd Heap (Ravens).
Atlanta would also get the man that would become Vick's favorite target in round 2 - TE Alge Crumpler.
Cincinnati made a big splash in round 2 also, getting WR Chad Johnson.
In fact, round 2 was pretty solid. We got the aforementioned QB Drew Brees (Chargers) plus DE Kyle Vanden Bosch (Cardinals), DT Kris Jenkins (Panthers), DE Aaron Schobel, RB Lamont Jordan (Jets), C Dominic Raiola (Lions), WR Chris Chambers (Dolphins), DT Shaun Rogers (Lions) and the now infamous RB Travis Henry (Bills) among others.
Rd. 3 was solid as well but the big steal was by Carolina. They grabbed WR Steve Smith to continue having a stellar draft. They got LB Dan Morgan & DT Kris Jenkins with their 1st two picks.
Another nice steal in round 3 was the Cardinals selection of S Adrian Wilson.
Cincy continued with maybe their best draft ever, getting RB Rudi Johnson in round 4. The Eagles would nab RB Correll Buckhalter. This was also the round when the other half of the kicking Gramatica's, Bill was drafted by the Cardinals and my Giants took The Bachelor. :rolleyes1:
The Bengals turn out to be big winners & finish the draft strong with T.J. Houshmandzadeh in rd. 7. The Jaguars would get S Marlon McCree and the 49ers picked TE Eric Johnson.
As expected, it was a fairly thin year for QBs. A few of them became starters for short stints (Chris Weinke, Quincy Carter and a couple others). Drew Brees is surely the best of the bunch. Just this past season he became only the 2nd player in league history to throw for over 5000 yards in a single season. And we all know how the Mike Vick thing is going. How I rank them:
1. Drew Brees (Chargers Round 2, 32nd overall)
2. Michael Vick (Falcons Round 1, 1st overall)
3. Quincy Carter (Cowboys Round 2, 53rd overall)
4. Sage Rosenfels (Redskins Round 4, 109th overall)
5. A.J. Feeley (Eagles Round 5, 155th overall)
6. Chris Weinke (Panthers Round 4, 106th overall)
7. Mike McMahon (Lions Round 5, 149th overall)
8. Marques Tuiasosopo (Raiders Round 2, 59th overall)
9. Jesse Palmer (Giants Round 4, 125th overall)
Did not throw an NFL pass:
Josh Booty (Seahawks Round 6, 172nd overall)
Josh Heupel (Dolphins Round 6, 177th overall)
