My introduction to the NFL was a random "Football Follies" VHS tape that I must have watched 100 times before I ever saw a second of live action.
When I finally got into watching the NFL for real I would always check the TV Guide channel once I saw that ESPN2 was running the previous year's team yearbook and found out when the Broncos episode was playing because before Sunday Ticket it was the only way for me to catch a solid recap of Broncos games that weren't national. It was fun to see them put a positive spin on seasons where a team completely imploded too, the titles were always something like "Building for the future" or "Finding the recipe for success".
I'll never forget the first time I saw this video from the Broncos 1996 season..

Ed and Steve Sabol can rightfully claim they had as much to do with the NFLs long term success than anyone else. It changed the way we not only view football but sports in general. NFL has always stood apart from other sports because of the work and vision those two had. He will be sorely missed.
And I think every football fans dream job was to work for NFL films. When they had an episode walking through the new updated digital facility I was floored at the possibilities.

Agreed, the work of the Sabol family cannot be overstated in the discussion of the growth of the NFL into the country's premier professional sports league. RIP Steve, his work will live on for as long as people watch football.
frankly, anything post John Fasenda is of no interest to me. NFL films lost something over time. Maybe that nostalgic feeling you got from Johns narration, or the grainy film effect from the 80ies and before. But as things got more commercialized, so to did NFL films. It became an over saturation imo. I was really bothered by NFL network showing classic games in their entirety by way of the NFL Films recording. very much a turn off

I never understood this. Highlights are one thing or a half hour special. Even the occasional post play sideline cut in. But the whole game ? I think everyone who watches the old games is doing it with the intent of seeing how it was to watch a game as originally broadcast.
As for NFL films...this one is by far my favorite. Basically encompasses every crazy highlight in some weird game timeline fashion with awesome music.

Agreed. I think a couple things happened after Facenda's death in 1984...the NFL in general and NFL Films in particular became more commercialized. It seems like the post-Facenda films are merely highlight packages, as if you are watching a long episode of Sportscenter. Also, I think Steve Sabol became less involved in the actual production of the films and more involved in the actual company. Sabol personally created many of the best NFL Films works.
