Nick Fairley Arrested For Second Time in 3 Months
Detroit's promising young defensive lineman just can't stay out of trouble.

Don't drink and drive people. It's bound to end badly.

That may sound like a simple and obvious statement, but as millions of people across the nation can attest to, it's apparently a very hard thing to avoid. One of the latest, and more visual people to fall prey to their own lapse of judgment is Detroit Lions second year defensive tackle Nick Fairley.

Fairley, who was just arrested back on April 3rd on a misdemeanor possession of marijuana following a traffic stop near his home in Mobile, AL., was arrested again Sunday and charged with driving under the influence and attempting to elude police. He was also issued traffic citations for reckless driving, no proof of insurance and open container.

According to police reports, Fairley was traveling 100 m.p.h. in his 2010 Cadillac Escalade when he passed a police car patrolling westbound on I-10. He initially refused to yield to emergency lights and sirens, and “showed signs of impairment” when he eventually stopped, according to a release given by the Alabama Department of Public Safety.

The two arrests of Fairley haven’t been the only offseason issues that the Lions have had to deal with, as two other players have been arrested this spring. Running back Mikel Leshoure was cited twice for possession of marijuana in Berrien County in February and March, pleading guilty to both charges, and offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath was arrested in South Carolina for possession of marijuana.

These three players, as well as receiver Titus Young who has been held out of practice because of sucker-punching a teammate, are all members of the Lions 2011 draft class. This unsettling coincidence, according to teammate Jason Hanson, is nothing more than a group of kids being young and dumb.

“I don’t want to speak for the guys that got busted for their stuff, it’s just too easy to be immature,” Hanson said. “I’m sorry, but it’s always been that problem. But it’s just you’re young and it’s the NFL and it’s big time and you’ve got money and it’s just too easy to be stupid.


“All those guys I know and they work hard, so hopefully the guys that have influence on them, cause the kicker can’t slap them on the head, say, ‘What are you doing? You don’t want to throw away your talent with your position,’ and (this is) just some slight hiccups for them. But it’s not a hiccup for the team. I know all the guys are just like, ‘You guys are idiots, let’s go.’ Like I said, it’s good. There haven’t been distractions, but those are good players that are messing up and they just need to (straighten up).”


For Fairley, hopefully that 'straightening up' means that the Lions will take his car keys, because it's obvious that this guy and driving just does not mix at this point.
