No Rookies in 2k12

Unlike the NFL Lockout, where EA Sports had rights to rookies for Madden NFL 12 regardless of whether there would be a season or not, the NBA lockout will cost its league licensed video game from introducing the incoming rookies.

NBA 2K12 will not include any of the rookies drafted in June – as confirmed through a blog posting at Operation Sports from a long-time member who attended a PR event for the game yesterday.

The plan would be to add the rookies through a roster update – but that could only be done once the lockout is lifted and at this point that seems unlikely to happen anytime soon. In the meantime players like #1 pick Kyrie Irving, #2 pick Derrick Williams, Kemba Walker, Jimmer Fredette and all those chosen in the 2011 NBA Draft will be absent from NBA 2K12.

It’s an unfortunate situation and presents yet another reason why the company decided to put so much of their resources into the “legends” and historic teams. Those will transcend the current NBA – which now will not just be using rosters based on the end of last year but won’t even have the rookies to look forward to.

Which isn't much of a surprise seeing as all those rookies arn't part of the players union and if you're not a part of it your rights have to be dealt with on an individual basis.

NBA has done a very good job of controlling the message and players aren't running their mouths on Twitter (credit to Billy Hunter/Derek Fisher who actually knows how to run a union apparently unlike a certain other guy).

The NFLPA got absolutely hosed in the labor deal. I'm still not sold that the NBA will play a season this year but I give the players and the owners credit for at least attempting to come to a long term solution. The NFLPA just bent over backward because "they just wanted to play football" and completely backed down on almost everything.

I'm...ok with this. Wasn't a huge draft class, and a better legends mode is better for the game imo. It also helps that NY didn't really get an impact player, and now we're gonna be able to get some Ewing cheese up in here.

They probably have them all created anyway, just a matter of legally being able to do it. I bet there'd be a roster update almost immediately afterwards.

2K is slowly turning into EA sports, first they discontinue their college basketball franchise then pull this not updating the roster crap! I would boycott them but I refuse to play any of those lame "The Show" titles

This. I honestly don't see any point of having them if you cant. Kind of like that all time teams in NCAA. couldn't play with them online so they were pointless to have.

IMO lack of player movement is a bigger problem than no rookies. Unless theres some drastic change in the game (ie: Online Association) theres pretty much no point in buying it. Might as well keep playing 2K11.
