O.J. Mayo Signs with Mavericks

O.J. Mayo said on Monday that he will be signing with the Mavs.

Mayo joins a backcourt with Darren Collison, Roddy Beaubois, and Vince Carter, which means he'll have no problem logging starter's minutes whether he starts or comes off the bench. He had problems in Memphis with being marginalized by his talented teammates and a coaching staff he butted heads with, so projecting an increase in production in a thin backcourt where he's wanted makes sense.

Thank you Mark Cuban, great way to rebound and grab some solid players. Like I stated in other threads, I was hoping they'd get OJ to replace Terry..glad it came true. I agree Rudi, I wouldn't be surprised if they let VC go later on down the road. He's getting slower and slower by the year.

Wow, you have to like what the Mavs have done after missing out on Deron Williams. Mayo should be the starter, which is probably why he went to Dallas.

I wouldn't be too surprised if Mayo starts but unless VC really can't move anymore I'd expect him to keep starting. I think Mayo is just better suited on almost any team to be a 6th man, especially now that the Mavs don't have a real facilitating point guard

I agree with you. The problem is OJ Mayo doesn't. Not only does he not agree, he continues to believe his pre-college hype about him being the next great thing. Hope it works out for him because he could be a nice fit in Dallas, but I would't be surprised if he eventually starts complaining about his role in the offense.

Im pretty sure somewhere in the deal Cuban most likely said he'd be the starter. Carter will be a backup at SF. The lineup would possibly look like this:

Collison/Roddy B
Mayo/West (If resigned)/ Dominique Jones or Jared Cunningham
Marion/Carter
Dirk/Wright/Brand
Kaman/Brand

Yeah really great job by the Mavs in at least staying competitive for another year without jeopardizing their future cap situation much at all.

Definitely not enough to beat Miami again but it's decent. Hopefully Collison and Mayo (2 youngins) can really reach their potential with us. Im sure Rick will do a great job with them as he did with Barea.

The Mavs are one or two seasons away from needing to tank.

They swung and missed hard on Williams and now while they have some cap room, they are stuck in a bit of a limbo where Dirk is getting older and the "max deal" they have in their back pocket will get them caught in mediocrity land...you won't be able to pair'em with Dirk for long and the rest of the team looks kind of scrubby at this point. They've been lapped by a few teams in the West. Okie State...San Antonio, despite aging vets have added some nice youth around them...Lakers are still a stronger team...Clippers, Memphis, and Denver have jumped them as well.

That Mavs roster is still fighting for 6/7/8 in the playoffs, sadly.

They'll still probably be able to fight for the playoffs and avoid mediocrity, but at the same time they are gradually easing into the rebuilding process, or at least until they can nab a superstar.

After this season, the only players definitely under contract will be Dirk's massive expiring, Collison, and OJ Mayo's expiring. Carter's deal is unguaranteed, Marion has an ETO, and Beaubois and Jones could hypothetically be free agents depending on their decisions. They have one of the best cap outlooks in the league still looking forward, and could really have an entirely new roster within 2 years if they wanted without much trouble.

You have to appreciate what they've done, because unlike other organizations (New Jersey) they haven't just started signing a bunch of dudes to long term deals just to appease their superstar. I guess Dirk not complaining about it also helps.
