Go to FMScout or FMBase and read up. Its the only way.

You may even want to start with FMC to get your bearings.

Yea, that's what I'm seeing. The amount of ratings is a bit overwhelming coming from OOTP. I've been able to match the types of players to the tactics that I am running (aka that I downloaded), but it's been easier for me to just see who has the most stars and then play them.

I've been writing down the relevant ratings and then going through and marking who has the best rating of each category, and then choosing a player from that.

Mental stat importance varies by position (from most to least):

Midfielders/DM
Attacking Midfielders
Central Defenders
Flank Defenders
Wing Backs
Strikers

You also have to understand your tactics.

For example I use a poacher and some guy may have 4* CA as a striker and be a useless poacher because he's a target man by trade.

For the 10 outfield positions there are about 20 different roles for them to play, most of which have totally different key attributes. This is probably the part of the game I struggled with the most at the beginning.

This is where the community sites are really helpful if you're new to the sport like we are.

Strikers need composure. Just as important as finishing for me.

Also don't be afraid to sit a better player for one that is worse but in better form.

It's the same strategy for any tactics really.

Forget the star ratings, they're subjective enough as it is because they're only tied to your current squad talent.

Pick a tactic, then write down the key attributes for each role (highighted in tactics), add up the numbers for the players able to play that position and voila, you have your best available player.

System over talent for me. I always try to find the best guys to fit into a rigid framework.

Mostly because I'm a terrible tactician and beholden to what has worked in the past.

I usually find a way to include talented guys with the changing roles. With transfers I do seek guys who I can plug in so I guess I really don't go talent over system too often.

Don't throw around tactics too much, stick with one for at least 2 months at a time. It takes a while to learn them.
