Old SOCOM Servers are to be shut down

I haven't played the older ones in a while. I know how much time I put into SOCOM and SOCOM 2. I used to occasionally play some SOCOM 2 a couple of years ago. MAG, Unit 13, and SOCOM 4 are to remain online

Bummer for those still putting in work on the PSP games.

I'd say they could HD-ify the old games from the PS2 era but with no online, you'd have to shake down the hardest of the hardcore SOCOM/tact-shooter fans and that wouldn't warrant the effort for the money it wouldn't bring in.

They did the same thing with the original Splinter Cell games and they still sold.

Point taken on the games only being worth it for the MP and not the story though.

Splinter Cell had a pretty damn good single player whereas SOCOM's was always pretty generic. If there is some technical reason to why they can't implement online in a HD remake, there would be no point to releasing them.

However, if they could do online, my dream would come true. All I've wanted from the series is a game exactly like SOCOM II with new maps and maybe a new feature or two. I don't want CoD in third person like Confrontation felt like (I haven't played SOCOM 4 yet because I'm sure it's awful). I just hope that some developer comes along and makes a SOCOM-like game that doesn't feel like a CoD or Battlefield clone.

Regardless, I'm pretty sad that they're shutting down the servers although I know this day would come eventually. I put in well over 1000 hours on SOCOM II with my clan. That was probably the most fun I've ever had playing a game.

Like Bauer said, that's like comparing apples to oranges. Splinter Cell has always been single player first, mp second. SOCOM was/is the other way around.

No word on Confrontation? I guess it isn't included because it was a different developer?

Ill post in here to say goodbye to an old friend.

SOCOM was the introduction into online for many, myself included. We would be in the Madden 02 lobbies and people would get together there to meet up and go play SOCOM. This was my game, this was the game. SOCOM II was one of my best games I have ever played, easily a favorite.

It was about the time I was done with high school and all I did was play video games. Therefore, I had no real responsibilities other than vids and a class or two. Turned out to be much more vids than classes. This game will always have my heart.

RIP Socom 2. That shit is what introduced me to online gaming, and Ive still havent played a game online that's close to it's intense/fun factor (RB6V is closest). A remake would be nice but we've been wishing for that for years now.

Game went to shit when they introduced spawning and huge ass maps with vehicles. What made the game fun/intense was the one and done factor. Shit was ill when it came down to you being the last one left vs 5 other people and going silent assassin on them all to win the round.
