Oscar Rewind - 2009's The Hurt Locker

I barely liked this movie when it came out, but I remember everyone fawning over it(distinctively a perfect 10 score from dell). To me it was nowhere in the same league as Up, Up in the Air, or Inglorious Basterds. Mark Boal(?) winning best original screenplay over Quentin Tarantino was a joke. Kathryn Bigelow had to pull the dead weight of the writing with her directing. Not even a top 3 in the best picture category, yet alone the rest of the movies that year.

Wanted to know if this movie still holds up for the people who liked it. It seems like it's fading into the background, but then again I'm partially biased because I was never a fan to begin with.

I liked it a lot but not more than Inglourious Basterds. I watched both of these a whole bunch of times after they came out on DVD (got em both for Xmas I distinctly remember). I thought it was really good and am not mad it won Best Picture, especially since it's main competition that year from the voter's perspective was Avatar.

Bigelow did a wonderful job, the action/suspense scenes were great. everything else I thought was weak due to the poor writing.

How do you compare it to Zero Dark Thirty? Enjoyed that much more.

I'm in the opposite boat here. I saw Zero Dark Thirty in theaters, and I have to say I enjoyed it. I wouldn't have put it near any best picture awards, but I enjoyed the shit out of it.

I didn't have a problem with it winning the award, but I don't think it's one of the best ever. That said, I really enjoyed The Hurt Locker and found it very entertaining and unique.

Loved it. Liked it a lot more than Zero Dark Thirty.

It was intense and very realistic.

Inglorious Basterds was not an original screen play, so it definitely shouldn't have won and Hurt Locker deserved it.

IB is so good tho. Its hard to choose between it and Up in the Air. I remember when Inglorious Basterds trailer came out, all it did was focus on the action and I was just not feeling it. Then I sit down in the theater and that opening act just blew me away.

Can't say whether it still holds up because I haven't watched it in quite a while. I did enjoy it a lot and have no problem with it winning Best Pic that year. Then again, as long as <i>Avatar</i> didn't win, I'm fine with that. Tarantino should definitely have won Best Screenplay, though.

I have watched and actually own the DVD of this movie. Pretty much the only thing Tarantino borrows is the title. Other than using that and casting Bo Svenson to pay homage to a movie from his childhood, there's not a whole lot in common between the two. It most certainly isn't a remake.

Except the plot arcs are nearly identical:

Set in Europe during WWII, a group of American soldiers are in the process of being shipped off to military prison for a variety of infractions, ranging from desertion to murder. While they're being transported, a German artillery attack hits the convoy, killing the MPs and enabling four of the prisoners to escape. The group decides their best bet is to head to neutral Switzerland where they can avoid the fighting and prison. As they make their way to what they think will be freedom, they end up volunteering for a commando mission to steal a V2 warhead for the French Underground. Somehow, the team must sneak into the most heavily guarded base in German territory, steal the Nazi's most precious military hardware, and bring it back to the allies without getting arrested again by their own side.

The only thing that synopsis is a near identical match of, is a film made a decade earlier called The Dirty Dozen.

If the first Basterds is only considered a knock off this, then I'd like to know how Tarantino's could be considered some sort of remake.

You had me a little confused too, because your original post makes it sound like IB didn't deserve to win the best picture Oscar because it isn't an original screenplay.

Nah that's not what i meant...was referring to Houston's Op about IB deserving best original screen play over the hurt locker because I didn't think IB was an original screen play. Then again, I haven't seen the original nor do I know how the academy defines "original" screen plays.

Best picture could have gone to either, I loved both and enjoy either more than ZD30.
