The proposed super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather is getting closer.

Mayweather agreed to terms for the welterweight title bout on Tuesday, multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN.com.

The proposed date is March 13, although there is a chance it could move to May 1, sources said. Mayweather, according to a source close to him, is OK with either date.

Pacquiao and Mayweather have fought recent bouts at catch weights. However if they complete their deal, the bout would be contested at 147 pounds, the maximum for a welterweight fight, a source said.

Top Rank's Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs), was flying to the Philippines on Tuesday night to meet with Pacquiao and try to close his side of the deal.

Arum spent much of Tuesday getting open issues resolved in his negotiations with Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who represents Mayweather, sources said. Once Arum was able to do that, he left for the Philippines and is expected back on Monday.

If the HBO PPV fight happens on March 13, it would force the tentative HBO PPV fight between light heavyweights Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins to move to another date. Hopkins and Jones both fight Wednesday and must win for their fight to go through.

The site for Pacquiao-Mayweather remains up in the air. There is interest from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to bring the fight to his new stadium. There is also interest from venues in Las Vegas, including the MGM Grand (which has hosted several Pacquiao and Mayweather fights), and the Superdome in New Orleans in hosting a fight many believe will break the all-time record for pay-per-view buys, which is the 2.44 million units sold for Mayweather's 2007 split decision victory against Oscar De La Hoya.

The fight moved front and center with heavy public demand for it following Pacquiao's dominant 12th-round knockout of Miguel Cotto to win a welterweight title on Nov. 14. The victory gave Pacquiao a title in a record-breaking seventh weight division and 1.25 million pay-per-view units.

Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs), who has won titles in five divisions, came out of a brief retirement in September to dominate Juan Manuel Marquez in a fight that generated 1.05 million buys.

Just a few days after Pacquiao's win over Cotto, Arum and Schaefer began negotiations.

One wrench in the talks was the date. Arum, Schaefer and HBO wanted to slot the fight on May 1. However, Pacquiao announced his candidacy for a congressional seat in the Philippines on Tuesday. With the election scheduled for May 10, it rules out a May 1 fight unless Pacquiao runs unopposed. Pacquiao lost the election for a congressional seat in 2007.

If Pacquiao-Mayweather isn't finalized, Arum has talked about matching Pacquiao with junior middleweight titlist Yuri Foreman, which would give Pacquiao an opportunity to win a title in an eighth division. Foreman defeated Daniel Santos to win a 154-pound belt on the Pacquiao-Cotto undercard.

Schaefer has talked about bringing Mayweather to England to match him with Matthew Hatton in the event Pacquiao-Mayweather isn't made. Hatton is the brother of Ricky Hatton, the former junior welterweight and welterweight titlist whom Mayweather knocked out in 2007.
 
UFC hopes it's March, otherwise it would go head to head with one of their shows. :)


The fight in the new Cowboys Stadium would be sweet.

I doubt it's so simple as, let's co-promote and leave it at that.

It would be great if they could have reached a deal but I don't blame Dana for not getting in bed with M1 to sign Fedor.

To sign him he would have to bend over backwards for them, but not to simply do a co-promotion. Dana's response to copromoting with M1 has always been along the lines of 'why' - saying that they don't need M1s help, even if it is only for one event.

So they could copromote, M1 has been doing that with a lot of orgs now, the difference with Dana is that he doesn't want to give any other large orgs any sort of positive recognition.
 
Hopefully this thing happens and Pac-Man takes Mayweather to town. I just dont know whether he's gonna be able to catch Mayweather long enough to get inside and do damage. Mayweather likes to Tim Sylvia it, only he's got the speed to really perfect the art.
 
I think its pretty close, but Mayweather has reach and he's perfected his style of boxing...as much as I hate it, its a legitimate style of boxing and its one that could give PacMan fits. PacMan makes people fight his fight and try to brawl, I dont think Mayweather is going to fall into that trap. He is perfectly fine winning a boxing match by landing 8 punches in 8 separate rounds and taking it on the cards. I dont like it, but theres no denying its effectiveness if you have the physical talents to back it up
 
The real question of the fight is can Manny get Floyd to brawl without gettin caught with a punch that could end the fight... has Manny fought anyone with speed that Floyd has at this weight... Nope.... Floyd fought Zab Judah who has blinding hand speed and is a southpaw just like Manny, and guess who he is planning on sparring with? the question for Floyd is can he popshot enough and counter Pac-Man to take the fights to the cards or possibly hurt him.... that check-hook Floyd loves to throw could end this fight if he catches Manny lunging in....
 
amazingly Judah gave Mayweather one of the best fights (forgot about the castillo fight early on in his career) and so with Pacquiao he even thinks Pacman can defeat Mayweather

Their styles are so empowering that it would undoubtedly make for one of the most interesting fights of all time.

Floyd is one of the most technical boxers of all time and has elite quickness/speed and decent power to boot. He is probably the only boxer in the world that can match Manny's speed but I don't think he'd be able to run from Manny because Manny does not tire and he presses like no other in that class.

But that doesn't automatically mean that Manny would get the better of Floyd. Make no mistake about it, Floyd can box with the best of them. People forget just how good Floyd can box when he is pressed because we haven't seen it in so long. Manny has holes in his defense that Floyd could really expose and take advantage of because he is so quick and accurate. The more I think about the fight the more I see Floyd's left check hook posing a serious problem for Manny.

At the same time, Manny could press and hurt Floyd in any of their exchanges because he is able to take some to give some. Not only that, but Manny's style is extremely unique and difficult to adjust to. Floyd has said that he never watches tape of his opponents and never gameplans for fights because a great fighter has to be able to feel his opponent out during the course of the fight and go from there.

I just really want to see someone press and attack Floyd to see how he would react to some adversity after Manny hits him in the face a few times. I just don't see how he could run away from Manny for 12 rounds because Manny's footwork is so superb that he will be able to close the distance and force Floyd to actually fight.
