One week after Jon Fitch dropped out of their scheduled UFC 132 rematch due to injury, B.J. Penn on Friday announced that he has also canceled his travel plans.
Speaking in a video on BJPenn.com entitled “Why I opted to pull out of UFC 132,” Penn explained that he suffered a serious shoulder injury prior to his meeting with Fitch at UFC 127.
“Of course, pushing my shoulder really hard during the Jon Fitch fight hurt my shoulder more,” said Penn. “I came back and tried to train, but every time I would train hard, it would just be really inflamed. I couldn’t even move it. Did an MRI, [but] I wanna keep some of that information confidential.”
“I need about six to eight weeks to take it easy on my shoulder, let it rest,” Penn explained. “If Jon Fitch is ready, we can do it soon, or I’ll take a new opponent.”
As a result of the injury, Penn will no longer compete on July 2 at UFC 132, which goes down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a bantamweight title bout between champion Dominick Cruz and the only man to ever beat him, Urijah Faber.
A former two-division UFC champion, Penn fought Fitch to a three-round majority draw on Feb. 27. The 32-year-old “Prodigy” recently made the move back to 170 pounds after ruling the UFC lightweight ranks for two years. After suffering back-to-back defeats to current champion Frankie Edgar, Penn knocked out old rival Matt Hughes in the Hawaiian’s November return to welterweight.
Condit Faces Stun Gun at UFC 132 in Las Vegas
A welterweight showdown between former World Extreme Cagefighting champ Carlos Condit and Korean import Dong Hyun Kim is in the works for UFC 132.
The UFC announced the news Friday on its official website, stating that the fighters have verbally agreed to square off at the July 2 event. Headlined by a bantamweight title clash between champion Dominick Cruz and challenger Urijah Faber, UFC 132 will emanate from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Also scheduled for the event is a trio of pivotal lightweight bouts, as George Sotiropoulos meets Evan Dunham, Dennis Siver locks horns with Matt Wiman, and Melvin Guillard scraps with Shane Roller. Though not yet added to the official fight card, a middleweight affair featuring Chris Leben and Wanderlei Silva is expected for the event. Additionally, Roufusport product Erik Koch is slated to meet fellow WEC vet Cub Swanson, while former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz faces “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 winner Ryan Bader.
Condit rides a three-fight win streak into his bout with Kim. After stumbling in his 2009 UFC debut against dangerous Dane Martin Kampmann, the “Natural Born Killer” rattled off victories over Jake Ellenberger, Rory MacDonald and former UFC title contender Dan Hardy. The 26-year-old Greg Jackson representative was supposed to return to action at UFC 127 in February, but Condit suffered a knee injury that forced him out of a planned bout with Chris Lytle.
A black belt in judo, Kim’s record is unblemished in his seven years a professional fighter. Holding a UFC record of 5-0 with one no-contest, the Korean most recently bested Cesar Gracie pupil Nate Diaz at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day in a highly competitive unanimous decision. The no-contest on Kim’s record comes as a result of a 2009 split decision loss to Karo Parisyan, later overturned after Parisyan tested positive for banned substances.
