The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired goalie Tomas Vokoun from the Washington Capitals on Monday for a seventh-round draft pick and then signed the veteran to a two-year, $4 million contract.

The veteran goalie was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The 35-year-old was 25-17-2 last season with a 2.51 goals against average and a .917 save percentage in 48 appearances for Washington.

Vokoun became the odd man out in Washington with the emergence of Braden Holtby and Michal Neuvirth.

Vokoun is likely to become the back-up to starter Marc-Andre Fleury, which puts the future of Brent Johnson as a Penguin in question.

Not much you can say about this. It isn't like Johnson was some prospect RFA. Vokoun just fills the void, and not bad at $2M for a guy who can come in and play more than half the season and give MAF some rest so he isn't playing a shit load of hockey all year.

Pens need to be careful on their spending though. Crosby, Staal, Kennedy, Cooke, and Jeffrey's all have their contracts coming up after next season, and Malkin follows a year after that. Word is that Staal might be shipped out to make cap space since he is probably going to ask for a 5-6M contract, Crosby I don't even want to think what the team will give him, and Malkin will probably get the same. Orpik and Letang are also in a contract year when Malkin is, so that is a lot of key players that the Penguins need to find room for.
 
I like the move, but like you said Ravin, our spending needs to be watched with all these key guys coming up on paydays.
 
Pens are going to be up against the cap, but having two goaltenders like MAF and Vokoun shouldn't be underestimated. Though I think Staal is going to be moved this off-season for sure, as those rumors have swirled for a couple seasons now.
