They won't trade for him without him signing the tender first.. then they would sign him to a long term deal.
Basically him being tagged is the average of the Top 5 DE's in football (Freeney, Mario Williams, etc) so his cap number is huge. But the Patriots would likely give him a mammoth deal and backload it so his cap number would be nowhere near that.

As amazing as it would be for the Patriots to land a talent like Peppers, its pretty unrealistic from a cap stand-point, no? A veteran like Jason Taylor seems to make a lot more sense.

I still think that it is possible for this deal to get done. I do have a pretty good feeling that either Jason Taylor or Julius Peppers will be a patriot next season.

I said it was possible...never said they were still gonna sign him, I just said that the patriots were going to either get Jason Taylor or Peppers. I am leaning more towards Taylor. He would give us one season and then the patriots could have a lot of cap space for next years monster free agency where Peppers could very well still be a free agent if he doesnt get a long term deal.
