Pitt vs. Miami = pathetic

Having watched Dave Wannstedt-coached teams for many years in both the NFL and NCAA, I've come to expect big losses to any quality opponent as well as anemic offense. But Pitt's effort against Miami last night was horrible. Miami didn't even play that well, but Pitt couldn't get anything going on offense. Their QB was like a high school QB playing against a top college team. The heralded Dion Lewis looked below average. I had to turn the game off because Pitt wasn't even competitive. I think the Big East should have their automatic BCS tie-in revoked.

I want Wanny to succeed. I think he's a great fit for the program, in that he's a Pittsburgh guy. I like his style of football. He genuinely cares about his players getting an education and succeeding in life. And I don't know what better replacement Pitt could attract should Wanny be fired.

However watching the offenses constantly struggle and play down to their competition has grown tiresome. I mean I love the power running game and all, but at some point you need pass on a down other then 3rd and long. Sure, the offensive line and quarterback are inexperienced, but last night was pathetic. Is it the talent level? The offensive play-calling? A combination of both?

Is the pinnacle of the modern-day Pitt football program to squander a BCS bowl bid by blowing its final two games last season and barely beating an above average UNC team in some meaningless [Insert sponsor here] toilet bowl game?

Sounds exactly how I felt about Weis for a while. He tried his heart out trying to put a winning team on the field for ND, and I wanted him to succeed. However, he was never able to put the pieces together, and it became clear that he just wasn't a good college head coach.

Now, I don't know how the Pitt fanbase feels about Wanny, but I have a hard time seeing Pitt do well outside of the Big East with him at the helm.

Since Miami, BC and VTech left, the Big East has become utter garbage. When Rutgers and UConn are your star programs, you have a problem.

I would want to see those teams play in a division like the Big East and see how they do. Cincinnati was just 12-1 last year and we also have West Virginia.

How are they not fucking terrible? The Mountain West's top three, maybe four teams are better than the Big East pre-season favorite. TCU/Utah/BYU/maybe even Air Force is better than the best of the Big East.

Cincy was 12-1 because of a weak conference last year...look what happened when they played legit competition last season. West Virginia is the best team IMO in that conference, but they aren't a great squad either. They barely got by Marshall and might get smashed by LSU tomorrow night.

Don't forget Big East "sleeper" UConn, who got curb-stomped by Temple last Saturday.

So tell me again, how is the Big East not fucking terrible?

As for Pitt, here's my opinion on them.

They've got some talent at the skill positions. Dion Lewis and Ray Graham are good backs, Jonathan Baldwin is a future first-round pick at WR and their ends Romeus (DNP last night) and Sheard could get a rush on any offensive tackle. Their offensive tackles are also highly regarded by NFL scouts.

The interior line on both sides of the ball is what kills Pitt the most. With Wanny's recruiting style, he both helps and hurts Pitt. He goes after the "best available player" most of the time, leaving him with Plan C prospects for the positions he might actually need; like the interior of the O and D-lines. Wanny's hailed as a great recruiter, but in reality his approach to recruiting is all wrong, but that doesn't matter because fans become infatuated with their ranking on Scout or Rivals.

Last night was a wake up call for Pitt...they really aren't that good. Miami could have hung 45-50 on them last night if it wasn't for Harris throwing two bad interceptions. Wanny isn't the best play-caller, that's pretty obvious to everyone, but that game was over after Miami drove down the field for a score easily, then forced a three-and-out by dominating the line of scrimmage on defense. Pitt has the skill athletes to keep it manageable with a Miami, but their lines and secondary might be MAC-level in terms of talent.

It's also pretty bad when your new quarterback Tino Sunseri makes Bill Stull look good.

Lol Fresno St. already beat Cincy this year and you know if Bosie St or TCU played them in a bowl last year they would have kicked thier ass.

Miami's defense played some nasty football.

However, Miami's offense is some hybrid between the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers from 04-06. Just a confused identity. They have a good stable of backs...a big, run-oriented offensive line...big, tall wide outs...yet, they play this west coast garbo that just doesn't vibe because the personnel and the scheme don't mix.

Miami should run the football down teams throats and then hit the little dink and dunks all of the way down field...distribute the football to the playmakers and let them make plays.

Jacory Harris, as much as I love him, is not a playmaking QB. He is a distributing QB. Be that and we win football games. Be more than that and well...we get burnt by Ohio State.

Agreed. It seems like Miami's defense is always up to the challenge, but they get in trouble when there offense goes through a phase of alternating 3-and-outs with turnovers. I think Jacory Harris is actually smarter than he plays. Miami asks him to do too much and make throws he can't really make, and this leads to turnovers. Miami should play more like Alabama and have Harris be the "McElroy" of the team.

Completely agree.

Miami's defense is ten fold better than the past few years because they now have a guy who can coach DL in Rick Petri, over that mope Clint Hurtt.

Miami's D will be solid this year, maybe even Top 10 in the country by seasons end. Good DL. Sean Spence is playing out of his mind. Brandon Harris is a Top 5 CB in college football.

The O though...Harris is a good QB. But, he has a noodle arm, yet Whipple thinks he is McNabb and Roethlisberger.

More roll outs, get Harris on the move and shift the pocket. Hit wide outs underneath and on check downs. Playaction. Go over the top occasionally. That should be the passing game...meanwhile, Miami should run down the throats of teams.

yes the BE is terrible this year, but the ACC is right there with them, and depending on the outcome of the three games this weekend (RU vs UNC, UC vs OU and LSU vs WVU, all which the BE will likely lose), the BE OOC record vs BCS teams this year will be 1-9, where as the ACC will be 3-11... but since 2005, in some areas the BE has outperformed other BCS conferences both in bowl records and head to head... as an example, i give you the bowl records and a SEC vs BE article:

since the realignment in '04, Pitt has only finished in the top half of the BE 3 times, with WVU doing it all 6 times and RU, USF and Louisville having matched or bettered Pitt in that regard... Pitt is a solid, middle of the pack BE team, but not a top BE team, and their OOC record shows that...

I think they've become a "top" BE team now, for whatever that's worth. The brain drain and player drain over the past few years has left the Big East cupboard bare. Louisville, Cincy, Rutgers, UConn, and USF all had their time in the sun, but that appears to be over. West Virginia is no longer a major player although they are still good. Pitt has become a top team by default, almost.
