Plaxico Burress Not Too Fond of Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow

Former Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress was not exactly complimentary toward his former teammate Mark Sanchez Thursday morning on an appearance on ESPN.

Burress appeared on “First Take” and was asked if he believes Sanchez is the quarterback to lead the Jets to a Super Bowl.

“They just paid him so I think they believe he is,” Burress said, referring to Sanchez’s contract extension in March.

He was then pressed whether he believes Sanchez is good enough to get the Jets to the Super Bowl.

“I think the defense will,” Burress said, taking a shot at Sanchez in the process. “I think they definitely have a Super Bowl defense.”
Burress spent one disappointing season with the Jets, registering career lows for a full season in catches and receiving yards. He is a free agent, but has drawn little to no interest from teams.

The hosts also asked Burress about the other Jets quarterback – Tim Tebow. Burress praised Tebow as a competitor, but indicated receivers would not want to play with him because he is not a pure passer.

“As a starting wide receiver in the NFL, you walk out there on Sunday and line up … it’s not Peyton Manning back there,” Burress said.
He also believes Tebow will push Sanchez.

“I think he’s going to make Mark Sanchez a better quarterback,” Burress said. “When they bring somebody in at your position, he’s going to compete.”

As for his own situation, Burress continues to say he wants to join the Panthers to play with Cam Newton, but the Panthers are not showing any interest in Burress.

Asked about his disappointing 2011 season, Burress said he was happy with what he did with the Jets after spending two years in prison.

“When I look at what I did last year, being away from the game for two years and being able to go out and play at the level I did and go out and being able to score eight touchdowns,” Burress said. “When I went to the Jets, the year before they were last in the red zone. Last time I checked, last season when I was there we were No. 1. I’m a lot stronger than I was last year. I think a lot of people are going to be surprised at the kind of shape I’m in.”

Plax still thinks highly of himself when all he is really good for is redzone targets, he wasn't a factor at all the 1st 80 yards and struggled to get off the press. Panthers would be a nice fit, if he's their #3, 4 WR.

This.. the guy is an asshat but his veiled shots at the two Jets QBs are warranted based on what we've seen from them.

I'm really disappointed in Sanchez. He hasn't developed really at all since his first start in the league.

My prediction is Sanchez has his best year yet. I think the Tebow competition will force him to improve and play better. If it doesn't work then maybe he needs to get out of NY. I think he can be a good NFL QB but he needs to be in the right situation....I am not sure what that is though.

I too think Tebow will push him however I think the situation could also become toxic for him if he starts off slow.

I watched Kyle Orton get beaten down emotionally by Broncos fans to the point where he didn't even care anymore last year and that attitude hurt the team in his last couple of starts for Denver.

How Sanchez deals with the criticism and calls for QB2 from the media and fans will be a big key to how this plays out in my opinion.

I can also see the constant Tebow questions tearing this team apart. In the beginning guys think it's cute, but as time moves forward they'll get tired of it. The only way to prevent a zoo is for Sanchez to take that next step into being a top 10 QB (which I think he has the ability to become), but with the Jets allegedly focusing on running the ball more this year I don't see it happening. Tebow will say the right thing, but you better believe he wants to be the starting QB and not some gimmick wildcat guy. Tebow is going push Sanchez to become a starter and his loyal followers will eat Sanchez from the inside out....it happened in Denver and it will happen with the Jets. Tebow will say the right thing, but he will never give in to being a backup/wildcat gimmick.

He didn't say anything too terrible. I mean, he didn't come out and say "Oh, he's shit" or something, they asked him a question about Sanchez and he responded "Well, his team just gave him a big contract extension, so I'm sure they think he is a Super Bowl quality QB". That isn't some huge diss. He also said it would be good for the guy to have some competition behind him in Tebow... that isn't an insult at all.

Sure, he'd be best suited probably keeping his mouth shut completely as he hopes for a new team, but this is really not news.
