Ok, so I know everyone has this discussion, but since I don't have the free time to do the research myself I thought I'd bring my question here. Why is the NCAA not using a playoff system? I know everyone has their opinion, but I would like to know the truth actual facts about this issue. Can someone please present me with facts?

Just a couple articles done up about the same thing. John Swofford represents the BCS as a whole. And Craig Thompson though directly representing the MWC, is representing all Non-BCS conference schools. The underlying argument of course is about money and the survival of the main bowls.

Getting rid of the BCS though isn't going to do you any good. How else are you going to rate teams, the biased media? the coaches? The BCS is going to be needed to rank the teams. Of course it takes into consideration the Media and Coaches Poll. However, it also includes six computer ratings. Obviously your not going to be able to have your cake, and eat it too.

my guess is that they dont want to lose the revenue they get from all of the bowl games. my solution is simple, keep all the bs minor bowl games they have now and take the top 8 teams based off of whatever system they want and put them in a playoff. Right now there are 4 "major" bowls: The Rose Bowl, The Fiesta Bowl, The Sugar Bowl, and The Orange Bowl. Take your top 8 teams and have the first round of playoff games be these bowl games. Then you get three more games to generate even more revenue. Granted, those 4 games might lose some of their income, but that would be easily surpassed by the money brought in by the extra games.

Just my take on it.

Theres no need for 16 or 24 teams in the playoffs, that just elongates the season unnecessarily. You can almost guarantee that the best team is in the top 8...at least I cant remember a season in recent memory where I thought the best team wasnt. I think youd be hard pressed to do the same.

No. With a playoff every game wouldn't count like it does now. Look at how big the Alabama - Florida game is gonna be. With a playoff implemented the game wouldn't be nearly as big a deal due to both teams ability to get into the playoffs.

To my knowledge, FBS college football is the only sport in the world without a playoff system. That should tell them something.

A suggestion.

8 playoff teams based on BCS rankings. Restrict scheduling to the first 12 weeks of the season. Do away with conference championship games, and the cupcake OOC games. This also prevents a team jumping an idle team by having essentially an "extra game" (Conference Championship) on their schedule. Take the eight qualifiers and have them play round 1 and 2 during week 14, and 15. The top two teams will meet in "The Championship Bowl".

The first six teams that didn't qualify for the BCS Playoffs will be featured in the other three bowl games. This gives teams 9-14 a top Bowl spot that under the current system they wouldn't sniff unless they were members of the now automatic bowl bids.

I think even a 4-team playoff would do the trick. I use to be anti-playoff, but I've come to accept that a 4 team guarantees most of the top teams, while allowing you to maintain the original bowls, not have the teams play a whole lot extra and maintain their stance that they are "student-athletes".

Anything more either renders the regular season worthless, or hurts the other aspects I mentioned.

Let's say league champs go to the playoffs. Under your scenerio, loser would go home.

That game would become more important.

And the idea that "every game counts" in CFB is a myth. There is no sport where less games count. Just ask Boise St, they are playing 12 meaningless games.

To expand on my previous point, we currently have 5-8 teams playing meaningful games right now. And when I say meaningful, i'm talking national title implications. Texas, Florida, Alabama, Cincy, a few others. Dont try to sell me Boise or TCU because they will never see the title game, and we all know it.

If you had a playoff where you took the 6 power league champs, and two at large smaller league champs, you'd have a huge slate of meaningful games each week.

CFB has the smallest percentage of games that truly count towards crowning the champ.

"Every game counts" is complete bullshit, you have 110 teams playing out the string right now.

While the idea of every conference champion goes into the tourney is kinda cool, you would have pretty big teams playing some pretty meaningless games. Plus, it's harder to filter those games through the current Bowl system. 4 team and even to an extent 8 team allows you to maintain some of the same bowls, while also have a pseudo-playoff system going.

Times change, the Bowls are antiquated and need to go. People will get over it, they always do.

In fact, just take the 4 major bowls and make them the 4 playoff games. You could even redo the old matchups and make everyone happy (Big 10 always plays the Pac 10 in round one in the Rose Bowl, etc)

I dont buy the meaningless game argument, because the current scenerio produces more meaningless games than a playoff would (unless you are under the belief that going to the Fiesta Bowl means something, which I am not. Who cares, winning the title is what matters).

You could still have all of the Whocares.com Bowls you want for the non playoff teams. They dont mean anything now, wont mean anything then, so there is no need to change that.
