She's been training for awhile with Greg Jackson's camp, and is 2-0 in MMA.
Following a breakdown in a potential bout with Norway’s Cecilia Braekhus dictated by the World Boxing Commission for the WBC welterweight title, women’s International Boxing Association and World Boxing Federation welterweight and light welterweight champion Holly Holm will continue her MMA career on Feb. 28 in Albuquerque, N.M. at Bellator 91.
The news was revealed by Holm’s boxing promoter, Lenny Fresquez, after Braekhus decided to fight Mia St. John in Denmark on April 13, thus violating the 90-day purse bid obligation.
“Holly Holm is the Queen of Boxing and she was ready to fight Braekhus,” said Fresquez. “They’ve been using Holly’s name for the last two years so they could build Braekhus’ name, and we’ve been chasing her for that long. Based on their decision to fight Mia, they obviously aren’t serious about fighting Holly.”
Holm, who holds a 31-2-3 record and 18 championships as a professional boxer, began a transition to MMA in 2011 under the tutelage of Jackson’s MMA. She has compiled a 2-0 record thus far, scoring a second-round TKO stoppage of Christina Domke due to leg kicks in May and a third-round TKO finish of Strikeforce veteran Jan Finney in September from a body kick. Both bouts took place at Fresquez-promoted events.
No opponent had been revealed for Holm at this time, but an official announcement from Bellator is expected in the near future.
Bellator 91 will take place from the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. The event features a light heavyweight title fight between current champion Christian M’Pumbu and recent tournament winner Attila Vegh. The night’s main card will air live on Spike TV, with the preliminary card streaming live on Spike.com. No other bouts have been announced by the promotion at this time.
