[PS3] PS3 Dead/Bricked?

I think my ps3 is dying. It is freezing during the startup of games, for instance, brand new madden it freezes at the loading screen and call of duty froze when I was searching for a game. Fuck anybody have any suggestions?

I can access everything on the XMB so I might backup my harddrive and then restore?? Maybe I will also try to clean the lens like I did on the ps2? I just don't wanna fuck it up even worse.

It's a 60gb LAUNCH PS3 BTW. Worse case I'd rather buy a slim for $250ish than send in this one to get fixed for $150.

Sounds like the Blu-Ray drive might be failing, or it is dirty.

Also could be overheating.

You could try formatting, but most likely its going to need repair.

I've been playing the shit out my PS3 the last several months and I've been worried about overheating. I would hate to lose the backwards compatibility of my launch 60gb as well.

Also, how thoroughly do you think Gamestop will check the system? I wonder if they would put a game in or not.. Probably I would assume.

I'm definitely going to look into it. Anybody have any experience with cleaning the lens? Because if I could clean the lens and it will temporary maybe permantly work like normal I could get away with a trade in. If I could get $150+ towards the slim I'd be veryyy happy.

If you open your ps3 no game stores will take it as a trade in. You need more than your average screw drivers to take apart your ps3. Do you have hobby/specialty smaller screwdrivers? you'll need a Torx screwdriver as well. Id recommend taking pictures as you take your ps3 apart. I was left with 2 screws i had no clue where they went after i reassembled my 60gb. I ended up just selling it on craigslist since nobody would give me anything for a ps3 that had been taken apart storewise.

It is the laser on your disc drive. It's shot. Very easy to replace, the laser with assembly (so that you don't have to calibrate it yourself) is about $60-70. Pretty easy to install if you are at all mechanically inclined. I did this about a year ago on my launch 60GB.

HOWEVER.....2 months ago I got the yellow light of death (I had no idea WTF this was till then, if you don't, look it up!!). My original PS3 launch console now sits in a box in my storage area. I bought a brand new PS3 slim instead of sending in the original for fixing. They send you back the same launch 60GB, but it won't be "your" machine.

If this new PS3 USB hack device is legit, I'll send the old one in and get it fixed and use that for the USB device.

How are you sure it's the laser? Also, it is not the YLOD either so that's good.

Also, I am able to sometimes get a game of Madden in when I turn the ps3 off from the back, leave it off for a lil bit, then turn it back on. However both times when I went to play another game after finishing the first one it froze after loading for the coin toss.
