Pursuit of Happiness | The Sean Joseph Woy Story

<hr>Chapter 1: Sanctuary
August 23, 2024
<hr>happiness (n.) - state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy<hr>Everyone has a sanctuary where they can find happiness or get away from their problems. For most people that place is usually their room, vehicle or that little hide-out in the backyard you had when you were a kid. That area is the most relaxing place in the world and once you found it, you've found something special.

My sanctuary consists of a 120-yard grass field, two goal posts and two large sections of grandstands. Every Friday night, those grandstands will fill up with anxious spectators, the field will see 22 men do battle and I will finally find a happiness or a calming peace in my life when I stand as one of those men, awaiting the snap from my center.

Some might say that living in the shadow of an all-time great puts a lot of pressure on you. There are those who relish the pressure, while there are others who fold under it. Me? I love it. I love being the son of Ethan Woy. I love being compared to my father - even though we play different positions - and the publicity that comes with it.

The community loves the fact I'm the son of arguably the greatest player in college football history. I can go to a local McDonald's and get my value meal for free. Need a ticket to the big concert held at LP Field? I can get them for next to nothing if I asked. Hell, the last time I went to a car dealership, the salesman wanted to sell me a brand new 2024 Ford Mustang for a fourth of its regular price. I had to decline that last offer though; I'm only 14.

But all of that is besides the point; let's get back to my sanctuary.

Davidson Academy has an excellent football tradition, winning three state titles in the last five years and 10 championships over the last 15 years. Most of their squads were senior-laden and once the current class would depart, they'd reload with the next class and continue their success. It's been 34 years since a freshman made the varsity squad; that is, until now.

...

"I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know, everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold, I'll be fine once I get it, I'll be good..."

Those words played through my iPod headphones and always calmed me before a game. When I found out about music, my father pushed me aside from the new stuff on the radio and gave me some of his favorites from back in his college days. Now while everyone's listening to MJ the Milkman and Lil' Kane, I've got classics from the late 2000's and early 2010's that I can hang onto.

"You listening to that Kid Cootie shit again?" Seth asked after overhearing the familiar beat from my ear-buds.

Seth Harris was a sophomore receiver who made varsity, but like me, wouldn't see much playing time. Being basically the two youngest players on the varsity roster and having the quarterback/receiver cliche connection working for us, we became best friends.

"Cudi...it's Cudi man," I corrected him, shaking my head. "How many times do I have to tell you?"

"Chill," he chuckled. "That shit just sounds so bad compared to the stuff out now."

"Really?" I shot back. "At least my shit doesn't sound so...so Gucci Mane or Waka Flocka."

"Who the hell are they?"

I burst out in laughter and patted him on the shoulder. "You wouldn't want to know."

"Whatever," he scoffed. "You ready to do some work against the second-stringers?"

"Ah you already know cuz," I answered with a smirk. "Coach better call some pass plays in garbage time so we can get our yards."

"Yeah definitely. You going to Greg's after this?"

Greg Yanders was a junior offensive tackle whose older brother was the usual party host the last few years. His family's warehouse back in the country was the perfect spot for post-game 'celebrations' and weekend 'get togethers' and it was pretty much guaranteed that he was having something after we won.

"I guess so," I hesitantly answered. The truth was that I didn't really want to go out, but I also didn't want to be anti-social and leave my friend hanging. "Should I tell my dad that I'm staying the night at your place?"

"Yeah, that'll be cool. I'll get Eric to pick us up at my house."

...

"Josh Thomas looks to his left, scrambles away from the pressure, sees Myron Williams open and heaves it in his direction...it's caught and they aren't catching him! Touchdown Bears! Thomas made something out of nothing and is rewarded with another touchdown pass!"

Everyone that was wearing burgundy and white, which was essentially 95% of the crowd, cheered and gave the first-team offense a standing ovation as they racked up their sixth touchdown of the game. At 45-0, the game was a blowout victory like most predicted, but the main attraction was about to enter the game.

"Woy!" Coach James yelled to the bench area where I was standing. I sprinted quickly to him and awaited the signal to enter the game. A simple hand gesture was that signal and after some of the fans started to make their way to the gates, they turned around and scrambled back to their seats as I jogged onto the field for my first varsity action.

With the second-string offense around me, I looked over to Coach Harris - our offensive coordinator - who put five fingers in the air. Checking the play sheet on my arm, I was sort of disappointed when I saw it was a simple run play.

"Ace 22 Blast on two. Ready? Break!"

Looking out to thousands of fans - fans that I would make a permanent mark in their lives for the next four years - I grinned and took my place under center.

"Red 35, Red 35," I barked out, scanning the defense as if I were going to run a pass play. "Set...hut, hut!"

The snap was clean and took one step before turning around to hand the ball off. Julius Evert, a junior fullback, received the exchange perfectly and threw his body into the pile ahead, gaining three or four yards. I looked up at the clock as it read 1:13 and figured we'd continue to run the ball and eat more time.

Coach Harris raised both of his hands and put up seven fingers, which brought a smile to my face as I looked down at my play sheet. Finally I would get to showcase my arm.

"Ace 34 Y Oakland on one. Ready? Break!"

Receiving another clean snap, I went into a five-step drop and read their zone defense. As Seth dug his cleat into the ground and turned his head to the outside, I fired a bullet 15 yards downfield which hit him right in the hands. He corralled it and was tripped from behind, but not after gaining another five yards.

Two more running plays sealed the deal and as the horn sounded the end of the game, I looked over to the cheerleaders and caught some of the sophomore ones glancing at me and giggling. Turning my head to Seth behind me, he shook his head yes and muttered, "They'll be there tonight." Suddenly, I didn't feel so hesitant about going to this party.

My first impression on the Davidson Academy faithful was a success; could my first impression on the older cheerleaders be one as well?

I'm back to claim my throne on the best site the interwebz can provide. This is my NCAA '11 Road to Glory story, and if you followed my NCAA '10 one - Catching Controversy | The Legend of Ethan Woy - you know you'll be getting a story that will have an ending (eventually, lol), that consists of football, sex, and other legal/illgeal things that will have your head spinning. Expect lots of twists and turns, cliffhangers and some updates that will come days after I promised them.

I already have some updates done, so I'll begin by posting 1-2 a day till I get where I am currently in the story. If you're lost, click one of the banners below to catch up on a lot of reading in the first part of this story, otherwise sit back and enjoy the ride.

Was the other post(s) not on any other sites?

The other posts were at all the other sites, I'm just easing my way into this so new readers (ex. Cudi, beamerball) wouldn't have 12 updates to read to catch up.

<hr>Chapter 2: Impressions
August 23, 2024
<hr>After showering and telling my father that I was spending the night at Seth's, I jumped in Seth's dad's truck and rode to his house. Once his parents fell asleep, he called up Eric and ten minutes later, Eric was outside his driveway ready to take us to Greg's warehouse.

"You excited man?" Seth asked me as the headlights from Eric's car revealed the destination.

"Yeah I guess," I replied, shrugging my shoulders. "I've really never been to a party like this before."

"Well you're in for a treat," he said with a smirk. "Once you experience something like this, you'll be wanting to repeat this shit every weekend."

Stepping out of the car, I left Eric and Seth ahead of me to walk in first. Once the door opened, I instantly heard the bass of the newest Lil' Kane single and ran into the hand extended to greet me.

"Well look who it is," starting quarterback Josh Thomas shouted, probably already feeling the effects of alcohol. "Glad you showed up frosh and by the way, nice throw out there."

"Thanks," I answered with a stutter in my voice. "You did work out there tonight also."

"Ah you already know that's just me doing me," he obnoxiously laughed. "But anyways, help yourself to whatever frosh. I think there's a few ladies for you back there in the corner."

He pointed towards the back right corner and sure enough, there was the group of sophomore cheerleaders giggling over me after the game. I just looked at him and nodded, then found Seth who already found himself in a game of beer pong.

"And this is for the game," Seth yelled as he let the ping-pong ball go from his hand. "Swish! Drink up son. Oh, what's good Sean? You want in this?"

"Yeah sure I'll get in a game," I replied, trying to make myself more comfortable. "Teams?"

"I'm down," he answered. "Ay yo Robby! Get your ass a teammate! We're gonna play team up."

Rob found a partner within seconds and we racked them up. Being a virgin from alcohol - minus a few sips of Dad's Captain Morgan when he wasn't home - I didn't know what to expect.

"Shoot for first shot...swish, it's ours."

Seth tossed the ball to me and I lined up my first attempt. It hit the edge of one of the middle cups but Robby gave it back to us with a miss of his own. Seth and Hector missed back-to-back shots, then I got it back and swished it in the farthest back cup. Robby and Hector went onto make just two shots as we took the game and awaited our next challengers.

Four more games, four more wins. One shot away from winning another, I took the ball and looked that same group of cheerleaders; only one being without a man beside them now. Doing something similar to an older movie called 'The Fast and Furious' I saw a year or so ago, I stared at her and shot the ball, swishing it without looking. She smiled and started biting her lower lip, which I took as a sign to go over there and talk to her.

"So, any reason why you're standing here alone?" I asked, wrapping my arm around her back to lead her to a seat.

"My girls went off with their men, so I really didn't know what to do," she responded. "I can see you're pretty good at pong."

"Yeah, I've played a few games every now and then," I lied just to improve my reputation. "I don't think I caught your name...wanna help me out with that?" She laughed as I pulled out my phone to hand to her, then smiled as she took it.

"Candace," she replied, pushing my phone's buttons to enter her number.

"Alright cool," I said as she handed the phone back to me. "I'm..."

"Sean Joseph Woy," she interrupted with a smile. "Son of future Hall of Fame receiver Ethan Woy. Yeah, I kinda know who you are."

"Damn, seems like someone is a big sports fan," I joked.

"Maybe just a little. More like my family is huge football fans and pretty much worship your father though."

"So I'm already a keeper in mom's and pop's eyes, huh?"

"You can say that," she said, winking. "I'm going to grab something from the cooler...you want anything?"

"Yeah sure, just grab me whatever's good."

"I'll be right back," she said, rubbing my arm before slowly letting go to get our drinks. While she was walking away, I stared at her incredible body, shook my head in amazement and took the last sip of my beer.

When she got back with our drinks, I thanked her and took a big gulp of mine which burned the back of my throat. She laughed when she saw a look of disgust on my face and took a slow sip of hers. "It's strong, huh?"

I nodded my head yes and took a much slower sip of it. Still burning my throat a bit, I did my best to hide it and smiled.

"Let's find a room," she suggested. "You know, to get to know each other better." Again I nodded my head, took another sip of my drink as she took me by the hand and led me to one of the rooms downstairs.

It was empty as I turned the lights on, seeing just the remains of a regular guest room; bed, some dressers and a night stand. I put my cup on the night stand as we both took a seat on the bed.

"So what attracts you most to me?" she asked, still holding onto my hand loosely. "I caught you looking over during the game."

"I think you have it the other way around," I said, smiling. "You were the one looking over at me after the game, giggling like a little school girl."

"Shut up!" she yelled jokingly while landing a playful right hook to my left shoulder. "We're weren't talking about you anyways."

"Oh is that so?" I asked, knowing that she was lying through her teeth.

"Yeah," she answered, still trying to pull off her little white lie. "We only talk about the starters anyways."

Her smile afterward gave everything away and she knew it. I looked away like I was upset about something, then seconds later gripped my hands around her waist to tickle her. She tried her hardest not to laugh and push my hands away, but it was to no avail.

"Stop!" she shouted, barely audible because of her laughter. Then instead of continuing her struggle to pull my hands off of her, she surprised me by leaning up and giving me a kiss square on the lips. I loosened my grip and sat there in a little bit of shock, but clearly it was a good type of disbelief. "Well hey, it worked."

"Are you implying that all I have to do is to tickle you in order to get a kiss?" I asked sarcastically.

"Nah," she said, before giving me another kiss; this time just on the cheek. "See?"

I looked into her brown eyes and saw that she wanted more, so I gently laid her down on her back and returned the two kisses she gave me. From there, it was constant making out for half an hour before the effects of the alcohol got to both of us as we both passed out in that bed.

It was safe to say that I passed 'First Impressions 101' with flying colors tonight.

<hr>Chapter 3: First Taste
August 30, 2024
<hr>Rumors of Candace and I's hook-up spread like wildfire during school on Monday. I was receiving death stares, pats on the back; pretty much anything you could think of. And there was Candace, not really willing to talk to me, but giggling like a mischievous school girl every time we saw each other. I didn't know what to think.

I had to push all of that aside though, because we had a big game at third ranked Father Ryan on Friday. With a victory, we'd most likely jump to first in the polls and become the favorites to take home States for the 11th time in the last 16 years.

Practices were rough and things heated up a little between the offense and defense; even some fights broke out. It wasn't because they were off-the-field disagreements in house, but everyone had that adrenaline flowing because they were excited for Friday night.

The hype continued to build for the prolific match-up and the rumors started to die down about Candace and I, until I ran into her Friday morning as we were walking into school.

"Who's wearing that?" she asked, pointing to the dark red home jersey I had clutched in my hand.

"You are now," I replied, handing it to her. She smiled, gave me a hug and ran off into the nearest bathroom to put the jersey on.

Of course the rumors started to flare up again when everyone saw the sophomore cheerleader wearing #7 on her chest and back. Seth started to give me a hard time about it and tried to get more out of me from last Saturday night.

"So you're sure you didn't do anything but kiss her?"

"Positive," I answered, putting a hand in his face. "Besides, what makes you think I'd tell you? I wouldn't want that shit getting out, you know?"

"Whatever man. I wouldn't tell a soul."

"Just like the time you didn't tell my dad I crashed his four-wheeler?" I raised my brow, reminding him of the past.

"Shut up," he said, pushing me away. We quickly dropped that topic and started to focus on the night ahead of us.

...

"..the 10, touchdown Father Ryan! Bronson McDonald slipped out on a screen, found a seam and was gone from there!"

McDonald, their senior all-state runningback, was ripping a new hole in our defense with three first half touchdowns. Josh had our only score off a quarterback sneak and we went into the locker-room down 21-7.

"Do you guys even want to play in this game!?" Coach James yelled out as he entered the room. "It sure doesn't fucking look like it!" He threw his offensive clipboard down and stared at mainly the defensive players. "Hey defense, you like that McDonald fella running all over your asses!? I'll make sure to get his autograph for all of you after this since he has you all in awe. But seriously, get your shit together; we're much better than this."

I tuned Coach out a little bit because I wasn't seeing any time, but before I walked back out onto the field, Coach Harris pulled me aside.

"We're going to need you here in this second half," he stated as he put his hand on my shoulder. "Be loose."

"Why?" I asked. "Josh is playing well; at least I think so."

"Just stay loose," he replied, walking away. I shrugged my shoulders and took Coach's advice, finding Seth to toss some easy ones to.

We found a little spark and got on the board with our first drive of the second half, making it 21-14, then took the ball back with an interception. I stopped throwing the ball around with Seth and walked back to the sidelines to watch the game, but I heard Coach James call my name.

"Yeah Coach?" I asked, sprinting over from the 50-yard line.

"Your arm loose?" he answered, returning my question with another in which I just nodded my head yes. "Get in there at receiver. Ace 37 Y Reverse Pass!"

I nervously shook my head and jogged out to replace Ryan at receiver. The rest of the huddle was kind of shocked to see me come from the sidelines, but after I relayed the play, it made sense.

"Green 13," Josh barked the cadence out. "Green 13...set...hut!"

The exchange was clean as Josh tossed the ball to Lance Keith. Myron started to sprint down field near the right sideline as I caught the pitch from Lance. The defense was totally confused and started to scramble back into their coverages, but it was too late as I unleashed a bomb that landed right in Myron's hands for a touchdown.

That was the momentum shifting moment we needed as we ended up scoring 28 unanswered points, leading to a 35-21 win over the highly ranked Irish. The win would surely put us on top of the Division II rankings and we were all riding an emotional high.

When I showered and got into my dad's truck, I pulled out my phone from my bag and was instantly greeted from a mess of text messages. Most were congratulatory, but the last one really intrigued me the most.

"nice game superstar ;-) u have any plans tomorrow?"

I smiled and replied with "movies with you?" in which I got a return smiley face. This first taste of winning a big game was nice, but hopefully tomorrow would provide a bigger highlight.

<hr>Chapter 4: The Quarterback and the Cheerleader
August 31, 2024
<hr>"Big date tonight, huh?" my dad asked as he entered my room.

"You can say that," I replied, still deciding on what button-down shirt I was going to wear. "Where's Mom when you need her?"

"I remember my first date," he said, starting off on a story that I didn't care to hear right now. "It was my freshman year and I was going bowling with this girl named Breann. Your grand-pap drove us and told embarrassing stories the entire way over. Luckily, she didn't pay attention to any of them and we had a great time."

"Dad!" I shouted, trying to get his attention.

"Yeah?"

"Promise to me that you won't do the same thing."

"Alright," he promised, patting me on the back. "No stories, I got it."

"Good," I said, relieved. "Now where's Mom?"

"She went grocery shopping," he answered, pointing at light blue bottom-down shirt laid on my bed. "Go with that one. I know I'm not your mom, but I was named best dressed on the team once so I have a sense of style."

We both laughed. "Thanks Dad."

...

"Have fun you two!" my dad said, as the door shut from his Ferrari. We both looked at each other and smiled, then I grabbed her hand as we talked into the movie theatre.

"I was expecting some funny stories from your father," she said with a hint of disappointment in her voice.

"Nah, I made sure he didn't say anything that I didn't want you knowing," I replied as I looked at the possible movie choices. "Does 'Robin' sound good? I never knew they'd make a movie about Batman's sidekick."

"Who's Batman?" she asked without a clue.

"Never mind," I insisted, buying the two tickets. It was a R-rated movie, but luckily the employee behind the counter was someone I knew from school, so I didn't need my I.D. checked.

"Your dad sure has a nice car. Think you could take me out in that sometime?"

"If you're with me still when I get my license, then yeah sure."

She raised her brow, saying, "what do you mean 'if you're still with me?' I didn't know we were together."

"I just figured that..."

"You gotta be patient boy," she interrupted, cutting me off. My expression turned to one of confusion before she winked at me and grabbed my hand. "Come on, let's get good seats."

...

"Not as good as 'The Dark Knight,' but still pretty good," I said to Candace as we walked out of the theater to her mom's Dodge Charger parked out front.

"What's 'The Dark Knight' about?" she asked with curiosity.

I could tell she never watched the classic greats of the late 2000's. "I'll rent it sometime and we'll watch it," I told her.

"Sounds like a second date," she replied with a smile.

Her house wasn't too far from the theater and when I walked inside, I was impressed with how big it was. Not as big as my house of course, but still pretty big. Once her mom left to meet her friends for some book club, Candace showed me around the place.

After checking out the pool, we dipped back into her bedroom and she shut the door. Sitting down on the bed, I started rubbing her leg and set the mood but she wasn't ready for intimacy just yet.

"So did you enjoy the day?" I asked as we both laid down on her comfortable bed.

"Yeah I did," she replied. "I think I want to become an actress when I get older."

"Oh really? I think you'd be pretty good at it."

"We should make a movie," she suggested, which got me to raise my brow in surprise. "The Quarterback and the Cheerleader...sounds catchy huh?"

"Sounds like a chick flick or sex-tape," I chuckled.

"Definitely not a sex-tape," she scoffed. "I'm not like most girls and just throw my body out there for whoever. Sex is a sign of commitment for me." I gave her a kiss on the forehead and she smiled. "I know...you probably think I'm weird or something now that I told you that; it's okay."

"No, not at all," I replied. "I really respect that and that makes me like you a lot more now."

Her smile got bigger and she returned my kiss with one of her own on my lips. "Good, because I hoped you liked me back."

"So does this mean?"

I didn't need an answer in words for my question, but I'll just assume it was a yes with her response of kisses.

<hr>Chapter 5: Partner
September 4, 2024
<hr>The hot topic at school - at least for the freshman and sophomore class - was Candace and I 'officially' being together. Some classmates were surprised, some were jealous, and some just didn't give two shits about it. But when we walked in holding hands, we both made a statement that we were off-limits to the opposite sex.

We had to go our separate ways before first period, since I had Freshman History and she had Geometry. I walked into Mrs. Allen's classroom and took my usual spot in the back, that way I wouldn't be called on for any of the questions. Pulling out my iPhone from my pocket, I started to play Madden 2025 when I overheard my name.

"Sean Joseph Woy and Brandi Sullivan."

"What did she want?" I thought to myself, before turning to my friend Cody. "What's she talking about?"

"She's choosing groups for the President project," he replied. "You're with Brandi."

He nudged his eyes over to his right and sure enough, there was the blonde freshman cheerleader/soccer player who was easily one of the hottest girls in our class. She just looked at me and smiled, then turned her head back into her notebook to continue jotting down notes.

"Why do you get so lucky?" Cody chuckled as Mrs. Allen continued to announce more group pairings.

"What do you mean?"

"You have the hottest sophomore girl as your girlfriend and the hottest freshman girl as your project partner. You need to share the love a little bit, man."

I laughed just loud enough for Mrs. Allen to hear me. "Excuse me Mr. Woy, but would you like to share what you're laughing at with the rest of the us?"

"Okay Mrs. Allen," I sarcastically answered. "What's the difference between Santa Claus and Tiger Woods?"

"Is it appropriate for class?"

"Eh, not really," I revealed, drawing laughter from all my classmates. She just shook her head and continued to announce groups for the project.

"But seriously, what's Candace going to say about this?" Cody said, continuing our conversation. "I'm almost positive she doesn't like Brandi."

"I'll talk to her about it when I see her," I replied. "I'm sure she'll be fine with it."

...

"Seriously?" Candace responded with when I told her about Brandi being my partner for my history project. She was visually upset with it, but understood that it was just a case of bad luck.

"Yeah, I didn't have a choice," I answered, shrugging my shoulders. "Mrs. Allen picked them for us. Why are you and her on such bad terms?"

"Long story," she said, before giving me a kiss on the cheek. "I got to get to class though. I'll see you in lunch, babe."

I let go of her hand and watched as that perfect body waltz down the hall. But as I turned to go to my next class, I ran into a girl and both our books fell.

"Sorry about that," I apologized, while getting down to gather my books. But when my eyes came back up from the ground, I noticed the pretty blonde figure that I would be getting to know a lot better the next few weeks standing above me.

"It's okay," she responded, before realizing who it was. "So I guess this is 'The Sean Joseph Woy' I've heard about, huh?"

"Yeah, people say I look like him but I don't see the resemblance," I joked, trying to get her to laugh. It worked as she smiled, but I didn't have the time for small talk. "But I got to go down to the gym for lifting. I'll talk to you later, I guess."

She just continued smiling and walked away, turning around to take one last glance at me. I just gathered my thoughts, then walked down to the weight room to meet up with my teammates for second period.
