Raheem's Plan to utilize a three-back system...

Bucs head coach Raheem "Sunshine" Morris has developed a plan that will allow for the Bucs to utilize a thee-back system instead of a two-back system. Raheem said he will employ a 2-2-1 strategy.

Essentially, Ward would play two series, Graham would play two series and Clifton Smith or Carnell Williams would play a series and the rotation would start over. I don't even see this working at all. Your going to take a running back out after two series to keep a rotation regardless of his performance. What if Ward has the hot-hand...now he has to sit the bench for 3 offensive series before he sees the field again...sounds stupid and rigid. Not a fan.

Putting together a specific plan such as 2-2-1 sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Maybe for the first rotation to see who has the hot hand...but other than that...sounds rather...terrible.

Considering Carnell Williams will be out for the year after his first series, it will more likely be Ward and Graham splitting carries. I think Ward should do well for the Bucs, and they have a decent run-blocking O-line.

Lol. This only a test. Nothing Morris has said indicates that he will employ this in the regular season as your first paragraph insinuates that will be the case. I posted over the Bucs "official" thread early this morning that this is for the Phins game.

I heard some negative sheet on the sports radio BS talk shows that this is what the deal is for the season as well, but that is not what Morris said.

that Williams will go first in a "2-2-1" rotation that Morris wants to test out for the regular season. Morris' idea is to give the first back two series, followed by two series for the second back in and one for the third.

On some days, that might be Graham-Ward-Williams, or Ward-Williams-Graham; the third back, said Morris, will pick up some extra work in specific situations (goal line, short yardage) and the Bucs will also find a role for lightning-quick scatback Clifton Smith.

On Thursday, though, it's Williams' turn to go first.

I can't find any credible site that quotes Morris as saying he is planning to do this Week 1 of the regular season. Maybe I overlooked one.

He wants Caddy to lead it off tomorrow night b/c it's Caddy's first time back. And hope that it's not his last, lol.

Plus, don't let me even get into the constant disagreements that Mark Dominik and Raheem have. I'm not talking in-fighting or anything, but, there have been some passive aggressive comments as of late regarding personnel. Sunshine can sugar-coat it all he wants, but, simple fact is, he wants to use this system.

Where's there smoke, there's fire, as the saying goes. I think cooler heads prevailed on Sunday, meaning I believe the Morris would have made the QB choice had it not been for those cooler heads, but that just speculation on my part. But I did see somewhere in a story that said that the Glazers were there and alluded to them having a say in the matter. I do rmember that the sotry did not quote anyone so I left it alone.

Intentional rotation doesnt work well like that.

If you have a hot hand you can kill it quickly , some guys need the carries to get into a rhythm , unless they are very distinct runners defenses wont give a shit.

Nothing wrong with splitting carries , but the decisions should be made on a drive by drive basis not predetermined in the preseason.

Ravens ran a 3 back system last year and I'd say it worked out pretty well for us, didn't it? I don't think any coach would be so dumb as to pre-plan who gets the carries. If one of the guys is running well, I'm sure he'll get the ball and continue getting it.

Now maybe if he did a 2-2-1 where Ward is in for two PLAYS, Graham for two PLAYS and Williams/Smith for one PLAY, I think he might have something. But three series is a long time, Ward would come out late in the 1st quarter and might not go back in until the 3rd quarter. You're looking at almost an hour and a half of sitting on the bench.

Injuries happen. Granted, injuries are not something that can be blamed on the player, but, I said on draft day in 2005 that my biggest concern was his durability. The guy has had nagging foot injuries, ankle injuries and has torn the paterllar tendon in both his left and right knees. I don't even know how he is coming back this time. It is a testament to his work ethic and his toughness. He just can't stay healthy though. His knees are probably like paper mache now.

I agree...and that may be what he ends up doing. Like Morris said, tonight will just a test and since it's Caddy's first game back, he wanted to get him in first, i.e., coming out of the tunnel, the crowd will prob erupt.

If he does adopt this system, IMO, it would be most likely the way you describe..Ward, Williams, Graham...Ward, Williams, Graham. Ward is the gun. He definitely should get the bulk of the carries. But I would hope that if somebody has a hot hand, whether it be any of the three above, or "Scatback" Smith, Morris should let the OC adapt. No question. And Jeff Jagodzinski very well could be a driving force behind this "test" as he is [and wants] a "power" run game system.

Be nice to see him do well and end the game healthy. Coaches said in practice [paraphrasing] that "he had the quick pivot cut move that he possessed as a rookie."

"I started doing it a little bit last night. It wasn't as detailed as I would like it. It wasn't all the situational things that I would like. It was OK. When you get a chance to see all three of those guys working together. Last night, we talked about it before too, feeding off the one that got hot. Last night Earnest and Cadillac got hot, [Ward ended up with only 4 carries.] so you kind of let them go a little bit. Then I was sad because I had to take them out because their time was done," Morris said.

If this route is the one Morris takes into the regular season, i.e., feeding off the one that is "hot" then I don't have a prob with his 2-2-1 rotation. But still, a guy sitting on the bench through two series could be lengthy at times.
