Raiders release Matt Flynn

Raiders released QB Matt Flynn.

It's a stunning admission of defeat from out-of-his-depth GM Reggie McKenzie, but hardly surprising considering coach Dennis Allen's barely-concealed disdain for his would-be starting quarterback. Flynn had tumbled behind Matt McGloin — a painful to watch quarterback in college — on the depth chart, and was embarrassingly inept in his Week 4 spot start against the Redskins. The fact that he's bringing home a guaranteed $6.5 million this season is one of the most embarrassing GM gaffes in recent memory. Between his money wasted in Flynn and fourth-round misfire on Tyler Wilson, McKenzie has proven he has no idea what he's doing with quarterbacks. Barely a No. 2 level talent, it's possible Flynn will latch back on with the Packers, who lack a viable backup behind Aaron Rodgers.

To be fair, McGloin looked good as a senior in college.

Yeah that was a pretty stupid thing to say...he really doesn't have the arm to sling it around...probably comparable to Flynn if that arm wise.

Flynn likely wanted out to explore his options to latch onto a #2 spot somewhere.

Which was a complete turnaround from how dreadful he looked as a sophomore and junior. Bill O'Brien will never have to worry about recruiting a decent quarterback to Penn State because he can always point to McGloin somehow making it to the pros.

Can't feel bad for Flynn, as he's pulling in some good cash for barely playing. He can find somewhere, either in GB as a backup, or the Bucs who could give him a couple starts. I think he got the raw end of the deal here, as it was clear Allen never wanted him from the beginning. Given how Pryor has played, who could blame him?

I'll never get what the Raiders were thinking here.
It was one game!
And, frankly, I watched a lot of that game. Yes, Flynn failed at the end ... but to be cut and demoted after that game seems insane.
I have no clue what goes on behind the scenes, but something about this entire thing is strange. Seattle, I get. Russell Wilson played his ass off and Flynn got a humongous signing bonus. But Oakland? Pryor is playing great, but do the Raiders really have that much to lose keeping Flynn around? The money is already paid.

Again, it has to be something behind the scenes, because these stats for one game don't offend me.

Flynn fell all the way to third string and he played God awful against a Redskins defense that isn't that great. And it isn't one game, it's every appearance he's made since his 6 TD pass game against the Lions.

I'm convinced you didn't watch the game dave simply because you keep fucking bringing up his stats. Fuck the stats, he played like garbage.

I am not saying Flynn is any team's answer, but I don't get the quick reaction. The coach threw him under the bus publicly faster than any player in history, and he only threw one INT. I am not for a second saying that Flynn is a misunderstood would-be franchise QB, but I just find his season with the Raiders incredibly baffling. Flynn alone did not lose to the Redskins. As a Bills/Eagles fan, I had to watch Jeff Tuel play like he was me last week ... and he didn't get cut.

Look Aso, don't get Dave wrong, you're one of his "good kids." Dave is just trying to have a conversation here, don't jump on him, you're better then this. Unlike most posters here who couldn't spell cat if you spotted them the c and the t, Dave knows his stuff. If he wants to post in this thread, let him, not like he has anything else to do, he certainly isn't having sex, lets be honest he isn't getting any from either sex. Plus dave works hard, he's only had three sick days his entire life.

Again, I want to make this clear - I am not saying Matt Flynn is misunderstood or a starting QB in the NFL. Clearly, he's not. Hell, his own coach in Green Bay (Joe Philbin) wouldn't give him a contract in Miami. BUT ... Oakland invested picks and money in this guy, and as bad games go, I'll take Flynn's over many other QBs. I just don't get Oakland's thinking here. Flynn already proved he was an ok backup in Green Bay, the money is paid, just keep him. If nothing else, you don't literally drop the guy into a tank of pirhannas the way Dennis Allen did after that game. I just don't get it.
