Jerry Rice / Wayne Gretzky are probably the greatest players of all time in respect to their position. I'm not sure I'm wording it correctly. Take the greatest of all times at every position in all sports. Then you somehow equalize them, Jerry Rice / Wayne Gretzky come out on top. If Randy Moss worked 1/8 as hard as Jerry...maybe he would have been. No one in the history of the game worked like Jerry...that guy was football 24/7/365, always making himself better. Randy is the most talented wide out of all-time, but he couldn't have given less of a fuck most of his career. As natural a talent as you'll see...doesn't matter if he didn't care.

In 2001 Rice had 1100 yards receiving. At age 39. Moss, at age 24, only had about 100 more.
Jerry Rice had 1200 yards receiving in 2002. At age 40. Moss, at age 25, only had 150 more.

If Calvin Johnson puts up another season in the realm of his previous 2 (Lets say another 1500 yard season) there will be a real argument that he might be the greatest receiver ever. Moss isn't even close. 5 years ago there was an argument that Moss might be the most talented receiver ever, but now that isn't even true.

Rice is the greatest, but everyone knows that if Moss played with Montana and Youngand Rice played with Culpepper, Kerry Collins, etc. then moss' numbers would look a lot like Rice's or better.

Moss will never be the goat, but he was one of the most feared receivers of all time.

One of the most, if not the most, talented for sure but not the best. Like Sven alluded to, Calvin Johnson is the only one threatening Jerrys G.O.A.T title but he may have already overtaken Randy as the most talented. Jerry wasnt a physical freak like Randy and CJ but his work ethic was second to none. Rice couldnt be stopped under any circumstance, same with CJ. If CJ and the Lions would actually start making a push for a title you he would certainly be in the convo with Rice but since Rice and the teams he were apart of were successful and won multiple SBs CJ will always play second fiddle.

Its the Brady vs Manning argument, some give the nod to Manning but a lot of people refute that with the super bowl ring argument.

Darren Woodson was once asked who the best and most feared offensive player he ever went up against was and he said Moss without a doubt. And he went up against Rice a lot.

Rice is the best because of his work ethic and consistency, the fact that he played with two first ballot hall of fe qbs helps his stats a ton which is why I don't like the stats argument so much. Moss was a better receiver when he wanted to be, but that's why he is no the goat.

Randy Moss is objectively speaking in the top 3 and IMO the single greatest weapon ever on a football field. A WR simply should never be able to affect defenses and scoring the way he did. He made it look like it was 2012 rules back in 98. Ive never seen anyone get as much fear and respect out of a CB or secondary then Moss that includes Rice.
Rice was a technician and a grand master at all aspects of the position. Hes the greatest ever and the numbers bear that out. But Moss as a pure athlete and weapon has no peer at WR.

In the magic scenario where both guys were 21 again ,GMs memory were wiped clean , and you could only look at NFL game footage. Moss IMO would be picked over Rice by most GMs in the league.

Bottom line I know Rices records. But Moss was a member of the two greatest offenses of the SB era(98 and 07) every QB that threw to him had career years including near MVP seasons for guys like Cunningham and 'Dullpepper'. The two best regular season records of the last 30 years belong to Moss teams (15-1, 16-0). 3 of the greatest rec TD seasons belong to Moss. Those are insane levels of impact for a guy who had 3 different QBs his first 3 years and about 8 regulars over the course of it.

Its worthy of a debate.

I love Randy Moss but I cant turn a blind eye to CJs versatility. With Moss is was strictly 9 routes, CJ gets the dirty yards in addition to the deep ball with 3 mfers trying to defend him. Its definitely debatable and if it isnt ATM it will be when CJ hangs them up.

Moss started his career with 6, 1000+ yard seasons.

CJ has 4 in 6 years.

Moss has 9, 10+ touchdown seasons

CJ has 3.
