Ravens Sign Elvis Dumervil For 5-Years, $35m

Ravens agreed to terms with DE/OLB Elvis Dumervil, formerly of the Broncos, on a five-year contract worth up to $35 million.

Just as some observers began writing off the reigning Super Bowl champs, GM Ozzie Newsome lands -- easily -- the top free agent left on the market. Dumervil will return to 3-4 outside linebacker in Baltimore. He enjoyed his career-best season as a 3-4 rush 'backer in Denver, leading the NFL with 17 sacks in 2009. Don "Wink" Martindale was on Denver's staff during that season and is now the Ravens' linebackers coach. Dumervil, 29, will team with Terrell Suggs to give Baltimore the premier outside-edge rusher duo in football, regardless of scheme.

It's interesting to hear how the local Baltimore media is spinning this signing right now. Everyone is acting like they just signed the equivalent of Reggie White when he first became a free agent. They are pushing how they got Dumervil for "$0.60 on the dollar" compared to overpaying for Krueger. And that he's "only" 2 years older than Krueger. Also, with Suggs and Dumervil and the additions of the TOTALLY AWESOME (that's my ad lib of their implications) Chris Canty and Marcus Spears, their pass rush will be one of the most feared in the league!!!! I understand they have a job to market their local team, and their fans want something to be upbeat about, but I can't help but see a bit of denial on what has occured.

I think for the outsiders looking in at the Ravens, why did they dropp these dollars on Dumervil when they didn't bother to resign Reed, C.Williams, Krueger, Ellerbe, McKinnie, and traded Boldin "because they didn't have enough money." IMO, they signed Dumervil because they knew they lost way more players than they expected they would and they needed someway to inject quality and positivity into the club. I honestly believe within the walls of Ravens HQ at Owings Mills they thought some of those guys would take a tad less to stay in Baltimore.

Ellerbe is a good run defender and pass rusher, but he's horrible in pass coverage. I mean he's got what, not even one full season under his belt at start? Wallace is also quite overvalued, he had less 1st downs and touchdowns than small named receivers like Greg Little, Donnie Avery and Kendall Wright among many other factors. He wasn't a big deep threat as many consider him as either this season.

Could be a monster outside in a 3-4 still and he wad effective as a 4-3 end still in Denver although if he's in there with Suggs at the same time you'll have a tough time if the RB finds a way to get outside the tackle box because Doom can get eaten up by non-OL blockers pretty easily.

Still, it sucks to see him go especially when the deal to keep him was in place.

It seems like you are jumping all over the Ravens for acting like signing Dumervil "rights the ship". Signing Dumervil doesn't take away the loss of key players, but it goes in the right direction.
The signing of Canty, Spears and Dumervil shouldn't be viewed as making up for what we lost, but to fix the busted run defense in Baltimore, that for the first time in years let in 200 yards rushing. (which Danelle Ellerbe played a key contributing part in)

2.5 Mil for a proven pass rusher, The Browns just blew a chunk of cap on a situational rusher, who has yet to start a full season and didn't come on until after Suggs returned from Injury. (coincidence?)

The Ravens make there money in the draft, So with their first 3 picks they can easily "right the ship" by taking a Safety and ILB.

What the fuck are you talking about? Seriously. You chose ONE year of Avery, Wright and Little because they happen to fit your argument for one year of Wallace's career. Why didn't you choose all of those receivers stats over the past 4 seasons? That's right, because it would blow your point out of the water. 4 modern era players have more TDs than Wallace in the first 4 years, Randy Moss (52), Fitz (34), Megatron and Colston (33), Wallace (32). And that's why he got his contract.
