Stu breaking out the checkbook. This, to me, means that we will deal a pitcher before the season for additional help in the lineup. They aren't going to pay $100 million to Evan so teams can pitch around him. We need a bat to pair with Evan and this kind of commitment tells me we will likely deal one of our starters.

This deal kicks in when Longo is 32. Not sure how I think about it considering that, and how the Rays aren't usually the spending type.

During his age 27 season, Ryan Braun signed a 5 year 105 million contract, to cover his age 32-36 seasons.

Evan Longoria, prior to his age 27 season, signed a 6 year 100 million contract, to cover his age 31-36 seasons. So after two years of inflation, the Rays still got a more team friendly contract.

Braun already had an 8 year, 45 million contract. The five year extension was added onto that.

If you include the now exercised options, Longoria's initial contract was for 9 years, 47.5.

Longoria signed his deal when he was a rookie, Braun signed his in his second year. Those two deals were extremely similar.

Found out today that Longoria's $4mm salary this year is now $2mm. The Rays converted the money he was owed into a signing bonus when his new contract was signed.
