Rays prepared to trade Price

The Rays currently own the worst record in baseball at 31-47, and by all indications they will trade away some players at the deadline to restock the organization with young players. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, Tampa Bay is prepared to trade David Price "right now," though no deal is imminent.

Last week Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported the Yankees, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Giants and Indians all had high-level and/or additional scouts on hand for Price's start against the Astros. He struck out 12 and held Houston to two runs in eight innings. All five clubs on hand could use rotation help.

Price, 28, has gone 5-7 with a 3.81 ERA in 16 starts and 115 2/3 innings this season. He leads all of baseball with 133 strikeouts and has only walked 13 batters. That 10.23 K/BB ratio would be the highest in history if he manages to keep it up all season.

Price's salary may be prohibitive for some clubs. He is due the rest of his $14 million salary this year and will remain under team control as an arbitration-eligible player next year, when his salary could climb to $20 million. Price will become a free agent after the 2015 campaign.

Price to the Dodgers so we can have an Apocalypse. Dodgers ownership group doesn't care about the prospects, they just want a title in LA. They could find a way to keep Price in town for awhile I'm sure too if they wanted too.

Indians seem like the least likely out of the teams mentioned, just doesn't make any sense for them in the long run.

I hate to see him go, but, its time to cut bait. I loved the bold moves that Friedman has had the guts to NOT MAKE over the last several years with BJ Upton and Carl Crawford, but, those guys walking with no return really hurt us. We need to move Price and start stocking the coffers with some big talent.

If your looking for a benchmark on value. Look at the Shields trade and then go up from there. Also, look for the Rays to probably trade Zobrist, Joyce and Escobar as well. They'll listen on just about anybody but Longo and Myers.

They did, and if you are competing for the playoffs like the Rays were at that time, the draft pick is good compensation. However, I also see the other point of being able to get a package of prospects in return for one of them, or even both.

Draft compensation is fine like you said, but you're better off cutting your losses if you are out of it and being able to hand pick prospects who have been actively playing in the minor leagues and you can get an idea of how you see them turning out for you down the road. I think what they did in 2011 might make them hold out hope until the last possible minute on this one(9 games back in 2011 with a month to play they got in, 10 games back with 3 months left this year).

Draft compensation is fine like you said, but you're better off cutting your losses if you are out of it and being able to hand pick prospects who have been actively playing in the minor leagues and you can get an idea of how you see them turning out for you down the road. I think what they did in 2011 might make them hold out hope until the last possible minute on this one(9 games back in 2011 with a month to play they got in, 10 games back with 3 months left this year).

Taking 3/4 from the Orioles certainly doesn't hurt. Bedard looked like the guy who garnered a package of Adam Jones and Chris Tillman almost a decade ago. The Rays just need to get healthy to get some consistency going.

I think Zobrist ends up in SF fwiw. Unless there is a deal where the Rays can get the package they are looking for with Price, and the team will only sweeten the pot if Zo is included.

I'd like to see the Nationals pick up Zobrist and deal Span. Play Hawpah in CF, Zimmerman in LF, and keep Rendon at third. Zobrist would play nice at second and his OBP would be good in the leadoff spot.

Of course, I'd like to have Price too, but I'm not sure it can be done unless the Nationals are willing to part with Giolito or Strasburg. Giolito, not so much. Strasburg on the other hand. I'd be willing to give him up for Price.
