Reds sign Ryan Madson

Fantastic addition to what now has the potential to be a lock down bullpen.

This all developed quickly today, I thought for sure they'd be stuck with another year of Cordero, who I feared was in for a steep decline.

The Reds have agreed to sign Ryan Madson, Jon Heyman of SI.com tweets. Scott Boras represents the right-hander, who figures to become the closer in Cincinnati's new-look bullpen.

Madson posted a 2.37 ERA with 9.2 K/9, 2.4 BB/9 and a 48.8% ground ball rate in 60 2/3 innings for the Phillies in 2011. The 31-year-old saved 32 games in his first full season as a closer. Last week 17.7% of 13,700 MLBTR readers said they expect Madson to sign with the Reds. Madson ranked 14th on MLBTR's list of top free agents entering the offseason.

Wow.......what a great signing. The big question is, especially for fantasy owners, what does this mean for Chapman? I think they have to transition him into the starting rotation at this point, but will they keep him in the pen?

Jocketty & Dusty keep insisting every time they are asked that Chapman will start.

With Madson in the mix, this gives them one pretty good LOOGY in Bill Bray, and a really good lefty setup man in Marshall (since Marshall won't be closing now), so it looks like they were serious.

If Chapman can't hack it as a starter, there are worse problems to have than having three really good shut down lefties in your pen.

Madson is the real deal, I loved having him in Philly, but I will love getting two draft picks in return. You are going to love having him in Cincy though, really knows how to get out of jams and his change up is filthy.

I kinda feel bad for Cordero, he really wanted to stay in Cincy and was willing to take less money, but he waited too long, lost his leverage, and now he's the last closer standing with no more closer jobs left.

He gave the Reds stability and four good years following the DAVID WEATHERS era, so i'd like to see him land on his feet and closing games for somebody again at some point.

Looks like a one year deal for around $10M.

The Reds saved around $10M between declining Cordero's option and making the Latos trade, so it's roughly a wash from that standpoint.

Madson and Cordero both fucked themselves by holding firm early, and then the jobs dried up.

Cordero had a two year deal on the table from the Reds in December, and now he may not even be closing whenever he settles in somewhere, which means he likely won't approach the $7 or $8M the Reds offered him.

For the Reds? Sure. But this isn't a player contract. He could have gotten a much better deal if he'd just taken the one the Phils threw at him. Now he has to make sure that he performs to get paid.
