Redskins clean house

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins unleashed a 30-something purge Thursday night, making the team significantly younger by cutting 10 players and clearing salary cap space for another aggressive run at free agency.

In the first major moves under the new brain trust of coach Mike Shanahan and general manager Bruce Allen, the Redskins said goodbye to seven players 30 or older: receiver Antwaan Randle El, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin, guard Randy Thomas, kick returner Rock Cartwright, cornerback Fred Smoot, running back Ladell Betts and backup quarterback Todd Collins.

"Obviously, it's a day of change for the Redskins," Allen said.

The Redskins started rebuilding the roster with the re-signing of center Casey Rabach, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

Rabach agreed to a three-year contract worth about $12.3 million, according to the source. His contract voided after the season and he was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.

The next big moves were expected to be put in motion at the midnight start of free agency, when the Redskins were again expected to be aggressive on the open market. Big-spending owner Dan Snyder has yielded roster control to Shanahan, but the coach and Allen have many needs to fill as they take over a 4-12 team and look ahead to a season with no salary cap.

"We're going to be active on the phones tonight," said Allen, who added he was under no spending restrictions from Snyder.

The Redskins tendered several players, making them restricted free agents. Quarterback Jason Campbell and cornerback Carlos Rogers both were given first-round tenders, limiting their chances of being courted by other teams. The Redskins have the right to match any offer they receive and can demand a first-round draft pick as compensation.

Campbell and Rogers are victims of the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and players' union. If the salary cap were still in place, both would become unrestricted free agents. Rogers, in particular, has voiced his disappointment over his tender and would prefer to play elsewhere after getting benched for parts of last season.

Allen shrugged off Rogers' concerns, saying he sees both Campbell and Rogers as part of the team next season.

"We're going to see players across the league that have concerns and issues with the current system," Allen said. "I look at that as just the nature of the world we're living in right now, and I don't consider that a problem."

Linebacker Rocky McIntosh, safety Reed Doughty, defensive tackle Kedric Golston, tackle Stephon Heyer and linebacker Chris Wilson were given second-round tenders. Defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery has a fifth-round tender, center Will Montgomery got a seventh-round tender, and defensive tackle Lorenzo Alexander was tendered but would require no compensation to sign.

The Redskins had the oldest roster in the NFL at the start of last season, with an average age of 27.60. A series of questionable personnel decisions led to an injury-prone roster with little depth, leading to the franchise's worst season since 1994.

Thursday's overhaul, therefore, was long overdue. It also came on the day that 32-year-old left tackle Chris Samuels announced his long-expected retirement because of a neck injury.

"Some of these players have been very good Redskins," Allen said. "They're good men, good citizens, but our plan was for 2010 and beyond."

Three younger backups were cut: running backs Marcus Mason and Eddie Williams and defensive lineman J.D. Skolnitsky.

None of the cuts are big surprises. Thomas has been a solid lineman and a good locker room presence, but he had major injuries in two of the last three seasons. Randle El never played up to the value of the big-money free agent deal he signed in 2006. Cartwright was a team captain, but his role on special teams was reduced last season.

Smoot's role also diminished during the 2009 season, Betts finished the year on injured reserve, and Griffin is on the downside of his career and not an ideal fit for the team's new 3-4 defense.

One player spared was running back Clinton Portis, who was injured much of last year and no longer looks like the back who broke rushing records earlier in his career. Portis might have been saved by the fact that most of his 2010 contract is guaranteed.

"Right now he's our starting running back," Allen said, "and that's what our plans are."

I'm going to miss Collins, Betts, and Griffin :(

I guess they forgot that Albert Haynesworth leaves the field once every 3 plays. I don't think he played a full set of downs this year.

Or the fact that portis is hurt every fucking year.

Or the fact that Jason Campbell fucking sucks and they need a veteran to teach a rookie how to come along.

Why would we? We already have Andre Carter, Brian Orakpo, and Phillip Daniels.

Talk about a mess at DE

I don't think a Cowboy fan should be talking to a shit about a 10 year old streak.
Yeah, because the Cowboys have spent ridiculous amounts of money on free agents in that span.

Does your ass still hurt from the raping that the Vikings gave you in the playoffs? Way to show up Cowboys... I'd rather miss the playoffs then look like the bunch of pussies that you all looked like that day.

I can at least say my team is on the right track. More than can be said here.

I think the acquisition of Portis wasn't all that bad. He was a very good player for a number of years, and, in spite of what you posted, he was very durable.

I think the main reason the Redskins have been less than stellar the past decade is the play of the QB has been bad. Mark Brunell was a nice QB in his prime, but he should have been a stop-gap with Washington. He started way too many games, really. Jason Campbell is bad. If he goes to another team, he'll continue to be bad. The best QB play they had was when Todd Collins started the 2nd half of one season. They made the playoffs, then Collins was immediately returned to the bench in favor of Jason Campbell. They might not have had the most explosive offense, but I think with Portis, Santana Moss, and Cooley they did have weapons.

Another factor is that I think some of the Redskins players were overrated. Lavar Arrington was decent, but he was routinely outplayed by Derek Smith. Fred Smoot was ok, but no shutdown CB. Guys like Randle-El were given starter money but weren't really starters.

Despite all their signings of linemen, the Redskins have never had strong O-lines or D-Lines. Perhaps they don't get the continuity when they keep bringing in new guys?

You'd rather miss the playoffs then win a game and have a chance at moving on to the con champ? Solid logic

Kind of unrelated to a thread topic, but my buddy and I had this same argument. The basic premise is that if you aren't going to win the championship, it is better to get a pick closer to #1 because in the end, you don't get shit for getting to the Divisional Round other than a late draft pick.

If I were the cowboys yes. Any other team, no. Cowboys don't win when the pressure is on, they have proved that the past few seasons. They have the talent, but no testicular fortitude.

And...this season because it's an uncapped year, the Cowboys are going to be victims of the Final Eight Plan.

4. The Final Eight Plan. This is perhaps the most confusing issue of the uncapped year for fans, but the concept is pretty simple. The deeper a team went in the 2009 playoffs, the less it can do in free agency. For example, the final four teams in the playoffs -- the Saints, Colts, Vikings and Jets -- can sign an unrestricted free agent only if they lose a free agent. Don't expect these teams to be in the free-agent bidding. Those four teams have 24 free agents combined, and few of them are starters -- particularly if the Colts re-sign Brackett and the Saints re-sign Sharper. The four teams that lost in the divisional playoff round -- the Cowboys, Ravens, Cardinals and Chargers -- have a limited ability to go into free agency. They can replace a lost starter, but they can also sign one unrestricted free agent with a first-year salary of around $5.5 million. Basically, the top eight teams of 2009 have to take a wait-and-see position on free agency.

I've heard the theory but I don't agree with it. I would rather my team gets the shot at a championship then not making it all. I'm sure Jets fans [longest underdog ever] could have used that theory when entering the playoffs but if you aren't in it then you can't win it [I know kinda cliche]. With the right scouting/staff you can pick up good peices in the draft either way

Know what's my favorite kind of Cowboy-hater?

The one who doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

Cowboys won't sit back in free agency
Despite restrictions, Dallas will be a player.

THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS

Published: 9:53 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010

The NFL's great experiment began in the early hours this morning, just after midnight.

Since the mid-1990s, the league has been governed by an economic system that included a salary cap designed to promote competitive balance among the teams. But the men who presided over that labor peace no longer run the sport.

The owners and players are engaged in a bargaining stare-down that has prompted predictions of a lockout next year. But first, both sides are prepared for a year without a salary cap, which officially began today.

The question is whether any NFL team will attempt to become the league's equivalent of baseball's New York Yankees.

Restrictions have been placed on the top eight teams, including the Dallas Cowboys. But that's like saying no one in the Cowboys front office can take a spin on the Texas Giant unless they are 48-inches tall.

The Cowboys aren't above the rules. But Jerry Jones and everyone else in the Cowboys front office stand taller than 48 inches, so those restrictions don't have an impact. Jones insists the Cowboys will be very active and pursue the players he wants.

"If it made sense to us (before the uncapped year), then it makes sense now," Jones said.

"The system allows us to make a lot of change and do some things that make us different and make us better. The thing I'm emphasizing is, make no mistake about it, I expect to see some new faces."

The Cowboys lost in the second round of the playoffs to Minnesota last season. That puts them in the second tier of the Final Eight Plan of clubs under restrictions.

Teams in this tier are given a $5.807 million slot in 2010 to sign a free agent. In addition, they can sign all the free agents they want at $3.672 million or less. If they lose one of their own free agents, they are allowed to replace him at a comparable contract.

Let's put that in perspective. The Cowboys signed three defensive starters in free agency last season. End Igor Olshansky, linebacker Keith Brooking and safety Gerald Sensabaugh each counted less than $3.6 million against the cap in their first season.

Right guard Leonard Davis was the last high-dollar freeagent signed by the Cowboys. His six-year, $42 million deal, which included a $16 million signing bonus, counted less than $5.8 million against the cap in his first season.

Restrictions placed on the four teams that advanced to the conference championship games are much more severe. But then, that's not the Cowboys' problem, is it?

The bottom line is, Jones believes the Final Eight Plan won't freeze him out of any free agent the club has targeted.

"We can do whatever we want to do,'' Jones said.

Another consequence of this uncapped offseason is more than 200 players who were scheduled to become unrestricted free agents and are now restricted.

Sorry about that, Miles Austin. Now the only way the Cowboys lose the breakout star wide receiver is if somebody offers an exorbitant contract AND top draft picks.

Talent evaluators don't regard this as a particularly strong unrestricted free-agent class.

Defensive end Julius Peppers will land an eye-catching contract as he leaves the Carolina Panthers. But the list of top players is relatively short: wide receiver Terrell Owens, safety Darren Sharper, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, and linebackers Karlos Dansby and Aaron Kampman.

The Cowboys probably won't be in the market for those players, with the possible exception of Sharper, coming off his Super Bowl-winning season in New Orleans.

But Dallas will be dangerous because it is such a desirable location for free agents and because, as executive vice president Stephen Jones will tell you, this team doesn't have any glaring needs. That allows the Cowboys to be opportunistic and pounce rather than desperately chase one player or position.

"If an opportunity presents itself to improve in an area, we'll be ready to move," Stephen Jones said.

Those opportunities won't be diminished by the Final Eight Plan.

"I know we're going to have some opportunities in this offseason," Jerry Jones said."And I'm going to take advantage of it."
Cliff notes: Dallas can basically go after whoever they want, so long as the first year salary stays under $3.6M

And even if they couldn't, they still would be in excellent shape seeing as how their best players are either in or just entering their physical primes. Washington's best players are over the hill and/or overpaid, with the exception of Orakpo.

Dallas doesn't have to spend a ton of money. Either way, they're set up to be a contender for years to come. Little Danny Snyder will spend that time frame throwing more money at his mistakes and this uncapped year just means there will be more mistakes to come.

Ask any neutral fan who they'd rather root for in the next 5 years. It's not even remotely close.

If I were the cowboys yes. Any other team, no. Cowboys don't win when the pressure is on, they have proved that the past few seasons. They have the talent, but no testicular fortitude.
Yeah, those last few weeks of the season and the first game against Philly really showed a lack of fortitude. You couldn't be more wrong in this case.

On the right track? How? Well, I guess you could be right, you won one playoff game this season instead of losing in the first round like usual.
I feel like the team pulled the same thing it did in 1991. The immediate goal was to win late in the year and win a playoff game. Once they did that, they relaxed and felt like they had accomplished something, then went out and got spanked by Detroit.

Next year, they realized their goal was to go out and dominate and they began their championship run.

Sounds familiar. Hate if you want, I'd much rather root for the team that is indeed on the right track, no matter what morons like you believe (or what ESPN says).
