Report: NFL Salary Cap will be $120 Million

Another hurdle crossed included a tentative agreement to make the 2011 salary cap $120 million, a source told ESPN.com NFL senior writer John Clayton. When a new collective bargaining agreement is reached, it will be seven to ten years in length, sources have told ESPN.

There will be a floor cap which means certain teams will have to spend money to get above it. That # is rumored to be $108 million.

Indeed. In the NHL they have it at 64 and 48. I just figured you'd have a greater range with higher dollar values in play, not less!

A handful of clubs have handed out bloated deals to aging players to reach the floor, but with this setup in the NFL I think it'll be far worse than what I've seen this NHL offseason.

Tampa has always had bogus incentives that somehow counted towards the cap that were not actually paid. The Glazer's would rather spend money on their kickball team across the pond.

With that being said, reaching the floor won't be too difficult. All they have to do is overspend on re-signing a few guys to front-loaded contracts and pick up a few average free agents. Next year will also require big spending, but they'll have a full off-season to plot and attack things then.

I highly doubt they throw the money at Nnamdi or any big name FAs though.

For instance, Miles Austin's salary this year is like 8.4M and 2.14 or something like that next year (I can get the numbers later). Romo and others have similar deals.

They should be able to reconstruct those contracts, and still be able to cut dead weight and re-sign Doug Free with room to spare.

Just to clarify this point, after conferring with someone in the know:

Dallas can restructure the contracts of Austin, Romo, and Ware easily without making any further moves and have a cap number of $119 Million.

Also, they could save about $25 more million in cap space by cutting (these are the five most likely candidates) Marion Barber, Marc Colombo, Terence Newman, Roy Williams, and Bigg Davis.

That's the absolute "blood-letting" scenario as far as cuts. I think the most likely guys to go are Barber and Colombo. Williams could go, but my understanding is the financials don't make sense to cut him for another year because the cap savings would be minimal. As far as Newman and Davis, yeah, they have high cap figures, but you have no viable replacements for either guy and they can still produce at a somewhat high level.

To cut all five would put them at about $96 million with a few positions to fill.

Slashing Barber and Columbo saves you $9.25 million at least. After restructures, that leaves Dallas around $109.75 million. (not the exact figure, bear with me. This shit is complicated)

The draft choices would take about $5 Million at most to sign. $114.75 million.

Doug Free's gotta get paid, will be interesting to see what he gets. I doubt he takes up the last ~6 mil of money. Re-sign Kyle Kosier as well.

All of that said, my understanding is that $120 Million is anything but a hard number.

So yeah, sorry to burst that bubble, but the Dallas Cowboys are not blowing up their roster, and they're not going to cut anyone that wasn't going to be replaced already. Not only are they in good shape as currently constituted, but if they wanted to throw money at Asomugha (not that I want them to), they'd be covered as they would most definitely be cutting Newman in that case.
