It appears that there's another team in the Roberto Luongo sweepstakes.

According to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, hockey analyst and former NHL player Enrico Ciccone of TVA Sports, and confirmed by TSN's James Duthie on Twitter, the Philadelphia Flyers are interested in acquiring the services of the veteran goaltender.

Duthie tweeted that the Flyers have inquired about the Canucks goalie, and are in a position where they could buy out current netminder Ilya Bryzgalov in June.

On Thursday, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren shot down the rumours.

"That made me chuckle," Holmgren told the Daily News. "It's safe to say those rumours aren't true. They have no basis or merit."

Trade rumours surrounding Luongo have been front and centre with this week's announcement of a new CBA for the NHL and its players. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers have been the two teams tied most closely to potentially acquiring Luongo.

Luongo fell out of favour in Vancouver when he was replaced by Cory Schneider for the last three games of the Canucks' first-round series loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

Last May, the 33-year-old told reporters he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause if Canucks general manager Mike Gillis asked him to.

Depends on how much the buyout is and for how many seasons, but that would be a lot of cash to pay to switch goaltenders who have both had limited success in the playoffs.

Haven't heard if he wants to go to Philly or not, but he has final say. Seems like Tor/Fla are in play cause he'd have said no by now if they weren't. Florida's already got the definitive yes, I've not seen anything to confirm he'd come to T.O.

I did hear Florida has the right of first refusal. If Florida doesn't want him, he would agree to go somewhere else.

I'd be upset if the Flyers traded for him, they don't have enough depth to trade away a couple of players. They really need to stand pat and see how the season unfolds and go from there.

I am hearing the Flyers rumor is bogus but the Flyers need a goalie or it is going to be the same story this year as it has been for the last decade. You might need to pony up some of those players to make a true run at the Cup.

My guess is that they could move enough in salary to fit Luongo into the cap this year, and then use whatever they are calling the amnesty thing next off-season to clear Bryzgalov. Still, the fact remains that Luongo hasn't had much success in the playoffs and would just be the same as keeping Bryzgalov, with an upgrade during the season. I don't see the sense of exchanging 1A with 1B.

Very true but I think Luongo is an upgrade over Bryz. Flyers have to do something about their goaltending. Besides wouldn't it be nice to see Loungo pumping the tires of Thomas Vokoun?

In one sense I hope he is traded to TO but the not for what the canucks are asking which apparantly is Gardiner + Kadri + picks which with the way the new CBA works is absurd.

Florida just shouldn't do it to be honest. They already have young talent in net in Markstrom and he just needs time to grow into the role. Trading away any rookies just seems like a step back imo in terms of what Florida is doing.

With Huberdeau and Howden probably playing this year and with guys like Grimaldi (americans should know that name now) and Mike Matheson still playing in the NCAA they should start to become a better team as time goes on.

With Vancouver's cap situation, teams like Toronto and Florida should be sticking it to Vancouver in the deal, since they are in huge need of cap space come next season. With the cap going down, rookies and entry level guys are going to have some value as they keep the cap down to a good level and teams can spend higher on other players for the time being.

Flyers are not going to trade for him. Seriously, I don't think there has been a move, trade, free agent, offer sheet or anything that hasn't included the Flyers in it, or them rumored to be involved in it.

Exactly, I think they just get included in a lot of rumors because they have a penchant for going after the big name players. The general consensus in Philly is that Bryz has this year to show what he's got or else he's gone. The Flyers need to upgrade their D before anything else.

They get some sort of buyout clause next off-season with the cap dropping. Look at the thread I posted on Thursday about Wade Redden's contract. It appears teams may get multiple buyouts as well.

May or may not be that easy.

I'm not 100% sure at this point but the flyers really have to address the Pronger situation and how they are going to get hit by a cap hit till he retires. The second buy out I think has some sort of penalty associated with it and can't happen till next summer. Wayne Simmonds contract is also a really bad one now if something were to happen to him in terms of injury or some sort of accient because his money is really back loaded. Hartnell is signed till he's 36 or 37 as well.

I'd say keep Bryz because he did play fairly well.

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis suggested to the Vancouver Sun on Tuesday that trade talks surrounding goalie Roberto Luongo are picking up steam.

"We have a potential deal in place with one team that has to do something with another player that they have — and it's not who anybody thinks it is — and so we have to wait. (But) we've been offered packages that don't fit what our plan is, what we need," Gillis told the Sun.

Gillis explained how the offers have not suited the Canucks' needs.

"(Teams would offer) excess salary coming back with a [throw-in] player who can't play in our lineup. They say, 'OK, we'll do this, but you've got to take this.' Well, we're not taking it. We've had lots of proposals like that with good pieces that can help us but the other part doesn't help us, and oftentimes they have term attached to them, so we'd just be turning around and buying out a guy.

"I'd rather keep the guy we know, who's a good person."

Last May, Luongo told reporters that he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause if the Canucks asked him to.

Cory Schneider started the Canucks opener on Saturday but was pulled in favour in Luongo during a 7-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Luongo got the start the next night and played the whole game in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

I don't doubt that the forced coexistence of the two is part of Vancouver's early season struggles, even if they do get along as it is generally thought to be the case. For the record, Luongo was shit against Edmonton anyway.
