The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles and Brian Roberts are "closing in on" a four-year contract extension.

Roberts, who was nearly traded to the Cubs last spring, had reportedly been holding out for a four-year deal after the Orioles offered him a three-year, $30 million extension this winter. No word yet on the money involved, but something in the neighborhood of $40 millions sounds about right.

Really think they'd be better off trading him. They're in no position to compete, and won't be at any point over his four year extension, so I don't see how it wouldn't make since to try and get a deal for him.

yea, I agreed with you a while ago but they havent been getting a package they wanted.

Andy McPhail is going to build the O's up big time over the next couple of years. I too would rather trade Roberts just because I would rather get a SP that we really need and have Freel or Wigginton play 2B. I don't agree with you though about the O's not competing in the next 4 years. With best prospect in Weiters, if Pie and Hill from Chicago preform how they were expected to. Pie is young, and has great potential, Adam Jones, also very young and already has proven he can play in the big leagues. We will still have Markakis, Roberts, and we will have great prospects in Weiters (C) Reimold (LF), Matsuz (SP), and atleast 3 other pitchers but I am drawing a blank right now. With some other moves that may or may not be made in the next four years, the O's could definitely contend. McPhail is pointing the O's in the right direction.

Signing Roberts is about more than just competing, it's about showing the fan base that a great player is willing to stay and that the owner is willing to shell out the $ to keep him. Signing Markakis and now Roberts is HUGE for the Orioles from a PR perspective as the majority of the fan base has felt that Angelos wouldn't put out the dough to keep these guys around or bring in good players, this changes that a bit.

Also, the O's had been trying to deal him. Why should they deal him just to deal him? If they aren't getting anything substantial in return, there is no reason to ship him out if he wants to stay.

Orioles should trade Roberts for a team with good SP prospects. They could use a very good one or maybe even try for a 2B prospect like Cardenas.

Earlier this offseason, the White Sox and the Orioles were discussing a trade that would have been Orioles receive SP Gavin Floyd and the White Sox would receive Brian Roberts. I don't know why this didn't go through, but I wish it would've. That would've been a great trade for the O's.

I believe the pitchers you're referring to are Tillman, Arrieta, and Erbe.

Regardless, I stick to saying they won't contend in the next four years. Most of your talent as far as young pitching is concerned are still a couple years off. Erbe and Arrieta got up to A+ last season. Tillman and Matusz are the furthest along.

I agree with building around Markakis, Remiold, and Weiters as all three have tremendous upside. I'm going to have to disagree with you on Pie though. I honestly don't see Pie ever amounting to anything more than a 4th outfielder, or a starter on a bad team. He has bad plate discipline, and despite his speed, is a poor base stealer. I just don't see him being a valuable player.

Jones has similar problems to Pie. Way too much of a free swinger IMO. Even when he had his monster season in AAA in 07 he walked only 36 times. Jones does have more upside though because he can hit for power.

Hill was a decent pickup, but unless he rediscovers some control, and quick, he's not going to last long in the AL East.

All that being said, there's certainly talent there, but it's not there for a few years. As someone else mentioned in the thread keeping Roberts around is more PR than anything else. Obviously I'm not saying he should be moved if the offers aren't there, but it would have made sense to get as much value for him as possible.

we wanted chris getz with floyd and they wouldnt budge.Im bummed we didn't bring Gavin home but I think we want more then 1 player for roberts. ala look at the Tejada & Bedard deals bringing multiple players back.

Yes, those are the pitchers I was referring to thanks. However, Pie and Jones are both very young and have plenty of time to improve and they both have "potential". I am excited to how this Orioles team will pan out. Hopefully it doesn't happen like every other year, in first place the first month or 2 and then just drop off very fast. When I look at out rotation, I don't see anything worth getting excited, all except for Guthrie I have never really heard of before. I've heard of Liz just because of last season, Uehara I only know from his press conference, and Hendrickson and Hill I have never really heard of before this year. Hopefully they can atleast get us a little deeper into the games then the 4th and 5th inning like last year.

I wouldn't expect much from Hendrickson. He's bounced around from Toronto, to Tampa, to LA to FLA to you guys and he's only been around for like 5 years or so. He's a tall lefty, but that's about all he has going for him. Career 5.07 ERA. Really no redeeming qualities to speak of.

Guthrie has been your best pitcher for the last two seasons. He's a decent #2 or #3 caliber guy. Doesn't get himself into walk trouble for the most part. Solid but unspectacular.

Liz used to be a pretty high rated prospect but he has pretty much bombed so far. Had a lot of control problems in the minors, but was able to get away with it because of his stuff. Well, his stuff hasn't translated too well to the major league level yet.

We have alot of pitching, they just aren't ready yet. If Arrieta can take his high level of play in the minors and continue it all the way to the big leagues, and Matusz is as good as predicted, we will be in good shape pitching wise soon, not this year though. That's not even mentioning the other young arms we have in the minors.

Hopefully they pan out, since Flanagan's guys like Penn, Olson, and Liz sure didn't...

Why want to hate the move Cho? Would you not prefer to re-sign the guy over trading him for a bunch of scrubs?

It's not like they didn't try to trade him, and evidently what teams were offering wasn't enough to get MacPhail to move him...if we could have moved him for the same type of deal we got for Bedard, I would have been for it, but that type of deal wasn't out there...I wouldn't have wanted another Tejada type return, with one so-so player (Scott) and a bunch of guys that are throw-ins who may or may not ever amount to anything.

I too am excited to see what Hill does. I really think MacPhail has done a tremendous job all around this offseason.
