It's directed by the guy that directed the Elite Squad movies, that is the only thing that gives me faith. I am really curious what kind of direction they go in. Both Elite Squads are gritty crime thrillers, or they could go completely opposite and not take itself seriously and go with the campy satire approach. I have no idea which would turn out better.

This could actually be a good movie...from the article, it sounds like this will be a prequel type movie, where he doesn't actually become Robocop until the very end.

I doubt they go campy. The first series was total camp and movies today seem to take the serious edge like Batman. The Elite Squad movies were fuckin sweet, so I agree with you.
 
Here's Kinnaman sharing some thoughts:

"I was looking to do a big movie and to show that I can carry a big movie, and I couldn’t be happier that this is going to be one of those big movies, a blockbuster, but that is also a real movie. A movie-movie... It’s going to have a political satire to it too.

"I’m super stoked. Especially with this director. José Padilha is a badass. He’s the real deal.

"There’s a lot of neuroscience now raising the question, ‘Is all the intelligence in the human body in the brain?’ and they’re finding out that, no, it’s not like that. The body has intelligence itself, and we’re much more of an organic creature in that way. It’s not a control tower that does everything.”

“RoboCop is going to be a lot more human. The first movie is one of my favorite movies. I love it. Of course, Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it’s not going to have that tone. It’s a re-imagination of it. There’s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece, for Alex Murphy and especially when he is RoboCop. It’s much more challenging.... It’s not going to be jaw action. They’re still working on the suit and how it’s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through. You’re going to see his eyes.”

The first two Robocops were great uber-violent R-rated satires. For this to even be acceptable I think they have to go this way. R3 was a watered down fam-friendly crappy version. I swear I hope they don't go that route.
 
I checked out the cast on IMDb today, some of these have been announced for a while, but the cast now includes Gary Oldman (sadly not as a villain), Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish as Murphy's wife, Hugh Laurie, Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach), and Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar).

Didn't they try to make Total Recall into a serious remake and apparently it's terrible? Leave it the way the movie is, and come up with an original idea Hollywood. Otherwise just quit making movies, we are getting worse than the Bollywood movies and I would know I am Indian.
