Rumor: Mets Will Hire Bob Melvin

The Mets are planning a press conference on Tuesday to announce who Sandy Alderson will hire as manager. The final candidates are Terry Collins, Bob Melvin, Wally Backman and Chip Hale.

Heading into the second interviews, it was assumed Collins was the favorite but right now all the "rumors" and "inside sources" say Melvin is the guy.

Won't be confirmed until Monday at the earliest.

Melvin has been a manager in MLB for 7 seasons. His record is 493-508 managing Seattle (two years) and Arizona (four and some change). His teams finished second three times, in fourth twice and once did they win a division.

He's anti-Bob Melvin b/c he has no "flash" or "entertainment" value for fans or the press.

How the heck did this happen? Two months ago, the speculation about the Mets opening focused on three men -- Backman, Joe Torre and Bobby Valentine. They were all names that resonated with New York's fan base and, more importantly, all names with genuine qualities a flat-lining franchise could use. For all his well-known flaws, Backman is universally regarded as a top-flight manager; a man who gets the most out of his players; who counts on aggressiveness and refuses to wait around for runs. For all his well-known flaws, Valentine is a one-of-a-kind baseball strategist who understands the intricacies of the game as well as any person who's ever managed (and who led the Mets to the 2000 World Series with an outfield of Jay Payton, Timo Perez and Benny Agbayani). For all his well-known flaws, Torre, well, there are very few well-known flaws. Who knows more about earning the trust of his players? About understanding New York? About winning?

The Mets were never interested in bringing back Bobby Valentine. Ever.

Joe Torre is done as a manager and the chances the Mets would be interested in paying him big money...not bloody likely. I think both "candidates" were just pushed by fans and talked about in the press because it made for a good story despite the fact that neither ever stood a chance at the gig.

Now sure, Wally Backman would be a fun hire...but Sandy Alderson is not hiring him in 2010 for the big leagues. Word is Backman will still receive a promotion and manage at a higher level in 2011 as he continues to gain experience and move up the ladder.

Supposedly, he appears on Mad Dog's Sirius show and has been saying for the past few days that according to his own "impeccable" sources, Backman will get the job.

Mets brass will meet tomorrow to decide on who gets the job and all signs pointing it to be in the following order:

1. Melvin, 2. Collins, 3. Hale, 4. Backman

I know your Braves-loving buffoon ass is just trolling, but it appears to be a solid hire.

Collins has been in the organization for a couple years I believe and he knows most of the young guys on the team. He reportedly got the nod over Hale b/c he has managerial experience (in MLB and internationally). He's a fiery personality and a Sandy Alderson guy so this is definitely Sandy's decision. No questions about the Wilpons changing his mind or making the decision for him.

Now it's about seeing what Sandy can do with Ollie Perez, Luis Castillo and company.
