Ryan Braun Signs extension through 2020

He was already signed through 2015 to a very team friendly deal. Should be interesting to see how friendly this extension is. It also includes a mutual option for an additional year. It will keep Braun in Milwaukee until he's at least 37.

Ken Rosenthal is reporting it's 5 years at 105 million, combine this with his current eight year contract and it's 13 years 150 million.

It's a lot of money, but it would be great for Milwaukee if Braun is a Brewer for life. I've been saying for the last few years, I only have two wishes as a baseball fan:
1) Ryan Braun plays his entire career in Milwaukee
2) The Brewers win a World Series in that time

That's all I want.

He would have likely gotten more then 105 million in 2015. Player gives up some money for security. The team buys low, but runs the risk of injury.

Taking the risk of locking up a talent far in advance vs. the risk of losing the player to free market free agency.

The Rays, Rockies and Brewers have been doing this much more. The Rays with Longoria and Wade Davis and the Rockies with Tulowitzki.

Small market teams can't compete on the free market, so instead they sign these guys to really longer termed but more "cost-controlled" contracts.

Players give up a little bit of money for the long term security.

Very team-friendly contract. Great to see this. Braun's always said he wants to be a Brewer for life, but you never know what could happen in 4 years if he was dealt a huge contract. He's an MVP-caliber player and this is great for the Brewers. Love it.

Prince wants at least $180 million, and he'll get that. If he continues to play like he has so far this year, he could get over $200M. No way the Brewers can offer that to him and no way Prince takes a 25%+ pay cut to stay in Milwaukee.

I'm not sure I'd consider the Pujols deal like this, he signed a 7-year, $100 million deal after his 3rd year in the league. That's roughly market value, just slightly under after signing a record arbitration number the year before. So I don't know if I'd classify that as the same.

Hanley signed a 6 year, $70 million deal after his 2nd year... that's far, far, far below market value for him.

In Ryan Braun's first at bat tonight, they played a sound bite from his press conference yesterday (where he said he wanted to be a Brewer forever because of the great fans) the crowd went wild. He had a standing ovation before each of his first two at bats, and a curtain call after his three run homer in the third inning.

So you don't believe that the Cardinals have had Pujols at a huge discount for the past four or five years? He's not even in the top 25 in salaries this season.

Who is going to pay Prince $200 plus million? Yankees, Red Sox, and Phillies all have their guy locked up; Mets and Dodgers are in a financial mess; leaving only the Angels and Cubs as viable options.
