Ryan Tannehill Named Dolphins Starting QB

Ryan Tannehill was named the Miami Dolphins' starting quarterback Monday for the team's season-opener at the Houston Texans.

"This is the best decision we can make at the given time," coach Joe Philbin said.

Philbin said both Tannehill and Matt Moore, who finished last season as the Dolphins' starter, were professional when informed of his choice.

Tannehill, selected eighth overall by Miami in the 2012 draft, finished 11 of 23 for 100 yards against the Panthers on Saturday night. He played the entire first half and led six possessions -- four of which ended in three-and-out. He found himself under heavy duress most of the game as the Panthers sacked him three times and batted down three balls at the line of scrimmage.

David Garrard was atop the Dolphins' opening depth chart in training camp, but the free-agent addition has been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this month.

Tannehill will be the 17th starting quarterback for Miami since Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season, the most in the NFL.

I was pretty critical of this draft pick but I'll keep an open mind on Tannehill. I can see what enamors NFL talent evaluators when they look at this kid, will be fun to see if/how he develops.

Thats not the case here. Garrard was def gonna start Week 1 but he got hurt.

Is Garrard that much better than Matt Moore? It seems to me that since Tannehill has looked decent he was going to be given the job regardless.

People are forgetting the fact that Matt Moore has looked like absolute shit so far. He isn't a "practice player", which is one of his knocks and doesn't help him in becoming a starter. So all Moore has to rely on is his play in preseason games......which has blown. Garrard is hurt and Devlin is too green. Pretty easy choice here. Even Philbin relayed during that presser, but not mentioned in articles, that when Garrard is healthy it will be re-evaluated. IMO, they should cut Garrard and save the $2.5 million guarantee he would get if on the roster week 1. Out all last year and is hurt the second week of camp....bad sign if you ask me to give him that cash plus a starting spot.

I am even surprised at how well Tanny has played. Look, the guy is going to make mistakes and have some bad games, anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding them self. A Marino, Manning, Roethlisberger, Newton, doesn't happen very often. Tanny seems mature enough to handle a shit team and season as a rookie. IMO, he reminds me of Aikman. Tall, strong arm, very intelligent, athleticism that will surprise you.

The athleticism shouldn't surprise people. When he was backing up Jarrod Johnson and playing WR, he was probably the second best WR on the team behind Jeff Fuller, and probably would have been drafted as a WR had he not gone back to QB. And TAMU had a bunch of good young WR's on that team, who he was able to beat out for heavy playing time.
