The Bears have fired offensive coordinator Ron Turner as expected, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Turner was on the hot seat after a poor season during which quarterback Jay Cutler struggled after coming over in a trade from Denver. Other changes could come on the offensive staff as well.

Jeremy Bates, an assistant at USC who coached Cutler with the Broncos, is a very strong candidate for the coordinator position. Former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis and former Rams coach Mike Martz are expected to get consideration as well.

While Turner is out, Lovie Smith is almost certain to return as coach next season, according to league sources.

However, Smith, who runs a defense that struggled this season, could have his play-calling duties stripped, which may lead to someone else making the defensive calls in 2010.

At this point, there has been no movement with the defensive staff. Rod Marinelli could be promoted to coordinator, though a team source said there has been no indication of that to this point. Smith has been running the defense for years, so even if someone else became the coordinator it might not change that fact.

The Bears (7-9) have a press conference set for later today, during which the Turner firing will be announced.
 
The hot name is Mike Martz b/c of the connection to Lovie in St Louis. Plus Whoever runs the Bears offense is basically a head coach of half the team.

Also they are saying now that Lovie will be back but they will take away his defensive play callng duties and give them to Miranelli...which begs the question....if Lovie isn't coaching the offense...isn't calling the defense...isn't coaching special teams....what the hell exactly is his function as a head coach then?

Forte hurt his hamstring in the preseason then hurt his knee against Cleveland. Never really got going this year. Was a little banged up and the offensive line was awful as well.
 
Pretty sure he wasn't/couldn't have been. Our offense was pretty bad that year considering Grossman ran it and our defense/special teams won almost half of our games.

Glad to see Turner leaving. I think a lot of Cutler's indecisiveness stemmed from terrible playcalling and bad offensive line play. Hopefully we bring in a OC that doesn't throw the ball 50+ times a game. You throw that much and you're bound to have that many interceptions.

I think you're thinking of the defensive coordinator at the time, Ron Rivera.

Also my dream of seeing Norv and Ron both coaching on the same team might be one step closer.

Finally. We cleaned house on the whole offensive coaching staff, minus Lovie. Rod is the new DC, which kinda sucks.


Oh well, had to start somewhere.
 
Apparently Marinelli isn't for sure the DC.

He will be a candidate but the Bears will look for a coach outside the organization as well.
 
Just had a humorous thought..

Lovie Smith is one of the only coaches I can think that was demoted from a coordinator position to Head Coach. LULZ.

If he's a good QB coach, hire him as a QB coach.

All this "new guy on the market" stuff is brutal. The Bears need a guy who is a great offensive mind. The Weiss angle already passed, as he signed with Pioli in KC (shoulda seen that one coming)....Martz remains the next best name...
 
The problem with Martz, is the Bears might not have the line to run his system. Martz likes to go vertical, which means lot of time in the pocket.

If I were you, I'd take Martz. He'll give you an explosive offense regardless of the talent level - this is the man who made Jon Kitna a 4000 yd passer and the Lions offense explosive. Whilst Millen was still the GM.

Kurt Warner threw 52 interceptions in 34 starts with Mike Martz as his head coach - and he's seen as one of the most accurate Quarterbacks in recent history. I highly doubt Martz is the guy you hire if you want him to stop slinging it.

And any QB/Offensive Co-ordinator combo worth their salt should be able to reach 4000 yards when you throw it 600 times every season.
